HANOI (Reuters) - Vietnam’s state oil firm PetroVietnam has ordered Spanish energy firm Repsol to suspend its “Red Emperor” project off the country’s southeastern coast following pressure from China, the BBC reported on Friday. {snip}
The block lies near the U-shaped “nine-dash line” that marks the vast area that China claims in the sea and overlaps what it says are its own oil concessions.
The field can produce 25,000-30,000 barrels of oil and 60 million cubic meters of gas a day, Vietnamese news provider Cafef.vn reported last month.
Repsol spent around 33 million euros ($41 million) on exploration in Vietnam last year...

For the region overall, this is pretty rotten news. The smaller claimants to the South China Sea (or West Philippine Sea as it’s called locally) had better group together to counter the local bully....Even if it means smoozing up to Uncle Sam for a while.
It could be too late to do something about it pretty darned quick if they are not careful.

True. But, Vietnam and China have also been enemies going back 1,000 years. Memories are long in that part of the world.
I am disappointed. Uncle Sam needs to become rapidly much more present in the Eastern Sea. That carrier needs a lot of followup.

The Vietnamese are not particularly fond of the Chinese. In February 1979 China invaded Vietnam with over 200,000 troops enlarging the force to over 300,000 by a week later. When Vietnam pushed them out after 3 weeks and 6 days, the Chinese left behind 62,500 dead, 550 military vehicles, and 115 tanks and pieces of artillery .
In 1100 years, Vietnam has never lost in any conflict with China.
It’s like when a lion closes in on a bunch of zebras. They all freak out. If they were all together they’d overrun and crush the predator. Instead they sacrifice the slowest(youngest) and move on hoping they’re the last to be eaten. Kinda like Republicans.
My daughter spent a year teaching English in Vietnam. They all want to learn English and become capitalists. They love the United States. Well, except for the government. They still have Vietnam war memorial places where it shows how they defeated the evil Americans. But the Vietnamese people want to be like us.

Yup, you’re right. Point being is Vietnam and China have a relationship of convience more than political alignment. Btw, I noticed by your handle you may be of Vietnamese ethnicity? I spent 1965/1966 in the Central Highlands. The Snake Eaters in that AO used Nungs, along with Montagnards for their security team and also to guard their backs when on patrol. Both ethnic groups were looked down on as second class citizens by the Annamese. Consequently, they were eager to align with Americans. Side note, my buds and me whould occasionally hop a Caribou to Saigon and would sometimes venture over to Cholon just to experience something a little different. Anyway, Vietnam isn’t/wasn’t the homogenous country that many people perceive it to be.
No. Not Vietnamese. I go there a lot, though. I helped a man get the financing to build his house back in 05 so I have a permanent room in a smallish town up near Cam Ranh. I love the country and the people, at least the ones I know.
