More like two thousand years. China ruled for the first thousand of those years but never turned the Vietnamese into Chinese or got the Vietnamese to love them.

Yup, you’re right. Point being is Vietnam and China have a relationship of convience more than political alignment. Btw, I noticed by your handle you may be of Vietnamese ethnicity? I spent 1965/1966 in the Central Highlands. The Snake Eaters in that AO used Nungs, along with Montagnards for their security team and also to guard their backs when on patrol. Both ethnic groups were looked down on as second class citizens by the Annamese. Consequently, they were eager to align with Americans. Side note, my buds and me whould occasionally hop a Caribou to Saigon and would sometimes venture over to Cholon just to experience something a little different. Anyway, Vietnam isn’t/wasn’t the homogenous country that many people perceive it to be.
