Mary Jo Kopechne’s Family on Ted Kennedy and Chappaquiddick: 'The Truth Has Never Really Come Out'

Mary Jo Kopechne had been dead for several months when her parents began to have serious questions about what really happened the night of July 18, 1969.

At first, Gwen and Joe Kopechne had believed Senator Ted Kennedy’s account of that evening. “They trusted him,” says Mary Jo’s aunt, Georgetta Potoski, 75. “They loved the Kennedys. But later on, they started to question what happened.”

Ted Kennedy could never escape the unanswered questions about his 10-hour delay in reporting the accident to Edgartown police.

“The longer it went on, more and more inconsistencies were discovered and he wasn’t telling Gwen and Joe anything,” says Potoski ,the sister of Gwen Kopechne. “Gwen and Joe never had the last hours of their daughter’s life explained to them.”

Now, 49 years after Mary Jo’s death, a new movie Chappaquiddick explores what happened that night and in the week that followed, when Kennedy pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident.

Potoski and her son William Nelson, 46, hope the film may prompt someone to come forward with new information— and give them the answers they never got from Senator Kennedy. “The truth has never really come out,” says Nelson. “The story has never been put to rest.”

The film has not been well-received by the Kennedy camp.

Still, Potoski and her family hope that Mary Jo’s story being told on screen will result in more people learning that she was much more than just a “blonde secretary,” as she was often referred to at the time.

Potoski and Nelson have written a book, Our Mary Jo, about her life and have also launched a scholarship in her name at Potoski’s alma mater, Misericordia College (now Misericordia University), to be given out for the first time this year.

Well, the truth would have come out if YOUR FAMILY had told it!!! What the hell were you waiting for? Stormy Daniels is all over the place hammering Trump, and this family couldn’t reveal the truth while the fat scumbag Kennedy was still alive?

From some older news stories, the family was paid $250,000 provided they never say anything about it. (equiv. of $2 million plus a few in today’s money).

I believe their silence was bought for a huge amount of money. It always seemed suspicous to me that the family just slipped away from the public eye, never to be heard from again. Sort of like the several dozen survivors of Benghazi. Never heard from a single one of them.

Yep. The Kennedy clan was more akin to the Mafia.

I think the essential details are pretty well know by now. Teddy was blitzed drunk and drove a car off a bridge. He escaped himself but left his female passenger to drown. He waited 10 hours to inform police so he could sober up and avoid a “drunk driving resulting in death” charge. Police divers reported that had they been notified immediately by Kennedy they would have had time to save her because there were air pockets in the car. Ted chose to let a woman die in order to save his own butt and potential political career.

Trump.

I know, that's a pat answer, and the movie has probably been in the making for years.

But I still think he's a factor.

An autopsy might have helped but the family would have none of it. Same with Scalia by the way.

I’m surprised, given the liberal bent of Hollywood, that somebody would make a movie about Chappaquiddick.

Maybe they had held.off till Teddy had died???

The story actually has come out. The book, “Senatorial Privilege” by Damore tells the story just about totally.

There are a few things one has to sort of read between the lines such as what they were doing but we really all know.

Also what made Teddy drive off the bridge? Probably drunk but he could have just been careless.

Still the basics are all told in the book.

Speculates what happened. The only one who really knew the truth was Kennedy, and he may have been so drunk he didn't know either.

It was either that or wind up in the Bay in a pair of cement shoes. Many peoples careers were ruined writing books and making movies about this before. The lid is off now because Fat Boy is dead and so are most of his willing accomplices.

Joseph Kennedy worked with the mob his whole life.

Sam Giancona said, “Joe Kennedy was the biggest crook I ever dealt with.”

Frank Costello said, “I made Joe Kennedy his money.”
