Sixty-eight people have died in a prison riot in northern Venezuela, Attorney General Tarek William Saab said late Wednesday.
Initial reports had said that five people had died when inmates at a detention center at the regional police headquarters in Carabobo state took a guard hostage and set fire to mattresses.
However, Saab said in a series of tweets that the dead comprised 66 men and two women, who were visiting the prison overnight.
An investigation would be launched immediately to clarify what had happened, he added, saying that four prosecutors had already been assigned to the case.

Or Maduro is getting rid of citizens who oppose his dictatorship.
Other news reports now say it was a fire that killed them but I think the ultimate cause was hunger. Perhaps a food riot that resulted in a fire that consumed them. Horrible way to go to be burned alive.
Yep that’s what I bet is the case!
They are probably the last people to get fed in the country and they are going hungry.
Probably some dying from hunger too that triggered the riot.
From the reports I just read it looks like the prisoners were burned alive. Brutal.
Another day in beautiful, scenic Venezuela. And everything is free.
Photos shared by the group showed prisoners being taken out on stretchers, their limbs frozen in awkward positions as their skin peeled off from the flames.
Wow that’s crazy!
The country is slowly descending into chaos.
Or they killed each other fighting over one piece of bread thrown into the cage...
Another article stated that the fire started because many prisoners set fire to their mattresses. To be that desperate it had to be due to starvation.
Socialist Maduro is taking that once producing country down the tubes where everyone is starving and homeless. Bernie should be so proud.
Perhaps a food riot that resulted in a fire that consumed them.
Or perhaps they were consumed by the prisoners?
They set fire to their mattresses figuring the prison officials would have to let them go. They figured wrong. They weren’t let out and the fires consumed the prisoners. To do something like that those prisoners had to be desperate from starvation.
Even their friends and relatives didn’t have enough spare food to give them. Maduro punishes anyone who complains and gives several millions to the local BBall team. I wonder if Bernie would step in to help out his socialistic dream country.
The same as if Mrs. Bill Clinton had her way - no trial.
So how many prisoners TOTAL were there? We know that 68 died. Since it was a temporary jail the total prisoner population couldn’t have been too big.
Good chance you're right on this...
If youre penned up and starving, you have nothing to lose whatsoever. You know youre dying anyway.
“Wow thats crazy!
The country is slowly descending into chaos.”
Doesn’t seem so slow to me.
