Over the last eight years three refineries within a half hour drive from me in the four corners have shut down
They are in the middle of a large oilfield. Makes no sense.
There is no shortage of refineries. If there was theyd be making mint and supply would be falling short of demand. Not saying a few more wouldnt help but the single biggest component of retail gas prices are taxes. After that its regulatory burden or the price of oil.
If you Factor in just taxes and inflation, gasoline is a historical low prices. Excluding the idiotic ethanol and botique gas blends because their is no accounting for stupid.
And some areas are forced to use ethanol gas only, which actually pollutes the groundwater more than just pure gasoline.
