This month, more than 100,000 city public school kids walked out to protest gun violence — but last century some students attended class armed with their rifles and practiced shooting on school grounds.

Once upon a time, we lived in a sane country.
Why are there no school shootings in Chicago?

High school? I was grade school for some.
What do you mean last century? When I was in first grade in 1966 the high school kids used to bring their rifles to school and shoot at birds during lunch. One day the school got a letter from the local power and light coop asking the school to stop the students from shooting up the power lines. The principle, who was a personal friend of my father's and a member of our church, saw it as an opportunity to ban guns at school all together. That prompted an emergency meeting of the school board, and they fired him.
And we had cap guns and squirt guns.
And when we were maybe 10, 11...we got to practice with a 22.
I hated that game................
I remember when I was 12-14 years old (late 1970’s). We would take some of a friend’s father’s rifles (always told him when we did), load them up in a car, one older brother, 16-17 years old, would drive us to some woods/abandoned construction site on the edge of town
We had set up a range at a place with tall earthen back-stops to shoot cans, targets, etc...
Once a cop must have heard the shots and came by. He eyed us up, and simply asked “who owns these guns, boys?” Our answer: “Uhh Sammy’s father.”
He told us to be safe, and drove away.
My high school was a half mile from prime duck hunting waters. We used to bring our shot guns to school and store them in the vice principal’s office (1969) so we could hunt after school for a couple hours. No one got killed or shot.
That is the last century.

yes, and we need to restore firearms training and shooting sports to the high schools all across America

I loved the game and played at lunch hour
However in my mind, correctly, it is mumbly peg.
It involved the loser getting the peg out of the ground with his teeth.
I can guess you ate a lot of dirt to hate the game : )
