A scientist from China has been sentenced to 10 years in prison in the United States for stealing seeds of genetically modified American rice, the Department of Justice announced Wednesday.

The Chinese scientist, Weiqiang Zhang, 51, was a legal permanent resident living in Manhattan, Kansas. He was working as a rice breeder at Ventria Bioscience, a biopharmaceutical company that creates genetically modified rice. He stole hundreds of rice seeds from the company that had cost millions of dollars and taken years of research to develop, according to the Justice Department. He kept the seeds in his home.

Another example why we need Trump's tariffs. IP theft is rampant by China.

Any company that employs a person with a connection to China as a scientist/developer/programmer/engineer/designer or anyone with access to proprietary information is foolish. This applies to Chinese citizens, naturalized American citizens of Chinese birth, American citizens married to ethnic Chinese and anyone else with either a familial or friendship connection to China.

Fifteen years ago the Huawei router manuals we were given for a project we did in Indonesia still had the Cisco logos on them. No kidding. There are hundreds of technology companies in China that outright stole American intellectual property and that now compete with our companies that created that technology. The government actively encourages it, but will never admit it.

One should assume that every Chinese national and every 1st and 2nd generation Chinese-"American" is an enemy agent engaged in military or industrial espionage. These are not isolated incidents.

Chinese IP theft is a problem. But how will making Chinese goods more expensive keep Chinese scientists out of Manhattan Kansas, or stop US companies from giving their IP to China in the first place?

US companies gave (or let Chinese companies steal) our technology. We should be holding their feet to the fire. Huawei probably made CISCO’s own routers under contract.

Reminds me of the episode on The Americans where the Russian spies went to an ag lab in Kansas and killed a researcher who they were convinced was going to poison all tje wheat growing in Russia. He had actually created a super wheat that could help eliminate world hunger.

In the later 90s, Chinese grad students were working in UNR’s IT dept. they had complete access to everything throughout the entire university. I was furious when I discovered it. I’m sure it was and is universal across the country to this day.

Damn good thing he did not delete 30,000 emails and smash all his communication devices with hammers that were all under supena by congress. If he did that he would really be in trouble unless he was Hillary Clinton.

The rule of law is only for the little people!

Newsweak's headline should have been "stealing American intellectual property".

Newsweak wants to make it sound like the big bad Americans locked up the poor little
coolie for stealing Uncle Ben's.

Meanwhile, Hillary is free to walk in the woods with an occasional appearance to promote her most recent excuse regarding why she lost the 2016 election.
