Giant Crane Collapses In Florida, Nearly Hitting Construction Workers
CBS Los Angeles ^ | April 5, 2018 | Anon - Staff Reporter

A massive crane at a Florida construction site toppled Thursday, nearly crushing workers below.

Surveillance footage provided by the St. Petersburg Police Department shows the moment the crane tips over, sending two workers below sprinting away. The crane narrowly missed one of at least eight workers running for their lives.

St. Petersburg police tweeted that no one was injured and that the construction site, at the department’s new headquarters, didn’t suffer major damage, although the crane itself did.

The Tampa Bay Times reports the crane was carrying a scissor lift weighing about 1,000 pounds. A worker told the Times that an operator who was inside the crane when it collapsed “limped away” after it fell.

Two days prior to the collapse, St. Petersburg police tweeted that construction on the new headquarters was “on time and under budget.” There’s no word on if the crane collapse will delay the opening date, currently set for next spring.

Wow, amazing that nobody was killed or seriously injured. The crane operator must have been thrown around when that cab toppled over. The one guy was late to wake up to the fact that the crane was falling right on his head and narrowly missed getting squashed like a bug.

That isn't a very heavy load for a crane that size. The boom and jib were out, but not excessively so.

I remember when a lady caught trapped under a crane-—years ago-—horrifying,but she made it.

NYC,I think.

It does appear that the operator was booming down before the crane toppled. The load should have been lowered for that procedure.

The load was well within limits of the winch, but the lift radius was indeed excessive, otherwise she would not have tipped.

It’s a miracle no one was seriously hurt. If you look closely, you can see the crane operator jumping clear of the crane and the crane falling on him, but he managed to walk away unscathed.

I saw this happen in San Antonio once with a slightly smaller crane. No one was hurt there either, but the boom landed straight across one of the construction worker’s pick-up truck and crushed it.

The video doesn’t seem to show the start of the lift, but lifting something that is already elevated and lowering it is one of the most dangerous things a crane can do.

If it lifts something on the ground and it starts to go over they can just put it back down, but that is not possible with lifting from an elevated spot and then lowering to the ground.

I don’t know why the crane was staged so far away. I have used cranes many times on jobsites and they get as up close and personal as they can. Maybe the crane was set up over there and they asked him to lift this one little thing and instead of moving he just took a risk and did it. When he was so far away like that it doesn’t take much weight to tip it.

The one guy was late to wake up to the fact that the crane was falling right on his head and narrowly missed getting squashed like a bug.

He never stopped running after the crane hit. He was still running at the lower right corner at the end of the video. Probably looking for the nearest porta potty.

No doubt. I used to remove hazardous trees with a crane. You started at the top and worked your way down.
Saw a out rigger lift off the ground a couple of times. Pretty scary when you are still in the tree under the load.

On a site like this, that crane is used mostly for area wide lifts of mostly light weight items like a pipe or beam in the lay down area that is shown. That is also not a giant crane. Definitely operator error, he should know his boom length, lift weight and use corresponding charts inside of cab showing maximum boom angle.

Yeah, I was thinking that too. Or he's probably still running.

There's this one guy in a red shirt right under where the crane fell working in a little trench it looks like. After the load fell (which looks like a scissor lift) he didn't run. The crane dropped, it looks like, only a few feet from him. he didn't run until after it had already dropped. Lucky guy.

“The Tampa Bay Times reports the crane was carrying a scissor lift weighing about 1,000 pounds”

A scissor lift that weighs 1000 pounds? I’ve never seen one that tiny
