Editorial: Plastic bag ban hurts many
The Boston Herald ^ | 04-07-2018 | Herald Staff

In recent weeks, more towns have joined the more than 60 Massachusetts communities that have municipal taxes or bans on single-use plastic shopping bags. On Beacon Hill, a plastic bag ban bill is slowly working its way through the legislative process.

Advocates of the bans point to multitudes of the discarded bags strewn about on city streets, in trees, storm drains and in the oceans, where they threaten fish and birds. They talk about the bags being made from dirty crude oil.

Progressive elected officials in cities and towns will always vote for laws and ordinances that provide the euphoric fix a symbolic, green gesture will provide. We see the same true believers in grocery stores beaming with self-satisfaction when handing their cloth bags over to the cashier.

Plastic bags made in the USA are made from natural gas, not oil.

There are between 25,000 and 30,000 people working in the plastic bag industry and to hastily threaten their livelihoods in the name of the environment while promoting other environmentally harmful products seems careless and even malicious.

There is no doubt that people litter and there are too many plastic bags floating around, but rather than legislate in a way that punishes the law-abiding majority, why don’t we focus on the minority of litterbugs out there who are causing the problem?

Some where there is a study (or several of them) citing the horrendous amount of germs/bacteria inside those wonderful and colorful logo-stamped cloth bags ... they spread disease, infecting the environmentally-conscious and very smug shopper with flu, colds, and other unpleasantness.

For your health and your family’s, always ask for clean plastic bags.

Luckily I live in a community that so far has not bought into this anti-plastic BS.

I always ask for double plastic bags at the supermarket. They make it easier to lift and safer to carry and can be reused as garbage bags which then end up in a landfill not the ocean or a storm drain.

A very few years ago the regressives wanted everybody to use plastic instead of paper bags in order to save the trees. Trees are all saved now?

I’d say the regressives need to make up their minds, but there’s not much there to work with.

“....the horrendous amount of germs/bacteria inside those wonderful and colorful logo-stamped cloth bags ... they spread disease”

Are they not washable?

BTW spray on germ killers (I won’t mention any names) are essentially insecticides. Chlorine is a naturally occurring antibacterial agent and is recognized leader in sanitizing protocols.

The litterbugs are almost certainly leftists who see no need to be personally responsible because to them, socialism means doing whatever you want and someone else will clean up after you.

Ever see a picture of an area after leftists have had a gathering there? And compared that to a picture of an area where conservatives have gathered?

I guess years ago tree farms were unheard of... but paper does compost well.

We find many uses for the bags - mostly as small trash can liners, in the shreader box, cleaning the kitty litter box and picking up dog waste in the back yard.

Keep some under the seats of the cars for trash that seems to magically appear.

Saves on having to buy a box of small bags at the store.

I reuse them to clean the litter box, and see folks walking their dogs carrying them to clean up.

Wouldn’t recommend using the cloth grocery tote for that.

Lazy dirty people cause this pollution not the bags, once again it is the inanimate object that is the root cause like guns that are problem not the lazy dirty uneducated people!

The odious term 'progressives' is yet another example of slathering Orwellian lipstick on the pig of Statism.

Among those afflicted with the terminal delusion of collectivism, rationality is a concept rarely encountered.

Appearance is paramount, while actual solutions are irrelevant.
The Beast is their god, and anything is fair game in sacrifice to its ravenous gluttony.

Some are washable, some are not.

But the problem with the washables is that people don’t.

If the progressives are so hard over to protect the environment, why not enforce the anti-littering laws already on the books!

When progressives have a march or protest, they leave a trashed and littered area in their wake. Then they turn around and demand more laws as a sop to their conscience about they way they trash their environment.

If there is a need for any law, it should be a law against the existence of progressives!

"...wanted everybody to use plastic instead of paper bags in order to save the trees."

I remember - but thought it was nuts as paper is a renewable resource (we can plant more trees), and much more environmentally friendly (decompose better).
But the libtards NEVER consider "unintended consequences" because they want their feelings addressed NOW.
They are never happy when they get what they asked for. So now the answer to any liberal's request for anything should be: "NO"

Deranged and outraged liberal buys or steals gun and goes on a shooting rampage...progressive blames gun.

Thoughtless and inconsiderate liberals litter plastic trash bags that they originally demanded replace paper bags to save the environment...progressive blames plastic bags.

Common thread in all cases...progressives.

Root cause analysis points to solution...ban progressives.
