SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is shutting down his Facebook account as the social media giant struggles to cope with the worst privacy crisis in its history.

In an email to USA Today, Wozniak says Facebook makes a lot of advertising money from personal details provided by users. He says the “profits are all based on the user’s info, but the users get none of the profits back.”

Exactly. It used to be the online hucksters would "sell your eyeballs" (looking at their ads), but Fakebook has figured out how to sell your entire life.

I refuse to have anything to do with it.

Note to Mr. Wozniak, Google is the same, or worse. Google not only has all the “Google account profile” data, but every bit of data it can put together by connecting all your browsing activity with all the websites you visit and all the web sites you long onto and all the on-line buying you do and all the financial data it collects otherwise and can connect you to. Who does it database all of that information for? It’s only real customers, the online data accumulators and who they serve, the only advertisers.

Wow, so it took Wozniak a decade or more to figure this out? I thought he was supposed to be a genius....

Facebook was upfront and honest in 2008/2009, saying that their profits would not occur, until they reached a point with data collection and data value....and they could market that for the incoming profits.

When you look at the marketable data...it’s basically ‘clicks’. If you clicked on 200 items in a month....then that has value. If you went clicked just six times in an entire month....never going to a news site or a political site....your value diminishes.

I would guess here that the Facebook spiral is maybe four to eight months away, where they lose customer participation and the stock value tumbles. I’ll even go out and predict that the board demotes Zuckerberg by spring of 2019. He’ll stay around to help develop the future, but I think his CEO days are over.

“Woz and all are free to opt out.”

He just did. But people need to know what exactly it is that they are giving up in these sorts of deals, and what it’s worth to themselves and to others. They’ve been treated like rubes and easy marks, because they are.

I seem to recall that sometime in the early years of Fakebook Mark Zuckerberg was actually quite boastful about an “end of privacy” kind of theme, where he was being quoted dismissing privacy as some antiquated notion being obliterated by technology. I was surprised that there was not a lot more push-back at the time.

Exactly, most of us here have been talking about the Facebook and Google crooks as the literal robber barons that have been selling personal data to the highest bidder for decades. They own the broadband monopoly and seem immune to the consequences of selling personal information. How many users have been harassed and stalked because of what these empires get away with? Tens of thousands at least. How many have been traced and murdered?

Which is exactly why the world is going cashless, and governments will soon do away with cash altogether. Revelation 13.

Eric Schmidt at Google said something similar, so I quit using Google to the best of my knowledge. I don’t use gmail or Chrome. Ditto with FB. They were busted some years ago for doing unauthorized research on their users. Never had a FB account and certainly wasn’t going to get one after that.

As well, credit cards are charged more per gallon of gas here in oregon.

Usually a nickel a gallon discount for cash.

You’ve seen the quizzes and personality questionnaires that appear on Facebook. They are tools of the data miners to micro target known people with more accurately pertinent ads. Millions of crazy nuts participate in those quizzes daily. It’s fricking nuts.

I agree that Facebook and other Internet businesses should be more transparent. However, the basic bargain of the Internet—free, relevant content in exchange for access to advertising—will not change. Internet advertising is no different than any sponsored media—it is just better at it. You can’t watch FoxNews and complain about Facebook’s advertising model.
