Trump just took a giant step towards actual welfare reform
New York Post ^ | 04/10/2018 | Kristina Rasmussen

President Trump’s new executive order on welfare reform has laid the groundwork to get more Americans get back to work while protecting and strengthening the safety net for the truly needy. Federal agencies must take advantage of this opportunity to roll back harmful Obama-era policies that have trapped families in dependency and cost taxpayers billions.

Right now, America combines near-record-low unemployment with near-record-high welfare dependency — the result of state-level eligibility exemptions, federal loopholes and policies that put work on the back burner. Many of these policies created incentives for able-bodied adults to sit on the sidelines — even though there is good, well-paying work available. The resulting safety net isn’t a safety net at all — it has entrapped able-bodied adults in dependency and threatened resources for the truly needy.

But welfare reform can change that. And the Trump administration has just given agency leaders a road map to do so.

The executive order, signed Tuesday afternoon, lays out principles to encourage economic mobility through work — a tactic that we’ve seen succeed in states across the nation. It calls for a strengthened work requirement for able-bodied adults, building off the requirement established in the 1996 bipartisan welfare reform that requires able-bodied adults on food stamps to work, train or volunteer for at least 20 hours per week.

Despite evidence that work requirements work — cutting time spent on welfare in half, doubling incomes and moving adults into over 600 diverse industries — the Obama administration approved waivers for those requirements in most states, citing high unemployment and severe job shortages.

What happened when states no longer required able-bodied adults to work to receive benefits? Predictably, the number of able-bodied adults on food stamps skyrocketed, more than tripling since 2000, while the cost to taxpayers went up fivefold.

Where's the Federal judge that is going to slap an injunction on this? Citing the US Constitution, Article 8 Section 12, Subsection 48, Paragraph 3, Line 9 that states: "Trump can't do that!"

Has few allies in House and Senate.

Yes, and the NYT will condemn it, claiming that Trump wants people to die in the streets.

For the Democrat party bringing people onto public assisantance is more important than finding them jobs.

Like I posted on the other thread.

Instead of blowing the SNAP Card on Booze and Smokes you would get a monthly supply of:

50 lbs Bag of Red Beans & Rice

50 lbs Bag of Flour

10 lbs Bag of Powdered Milk

10 lbs Block of Cheese

10 lbs Bologna Log

10 lbs Jar of Peanut Butter

Cases of Canned Vegetables.

And just because us Americans are super generous, I propose we also include two 10 lbs Bags of Generic Cheerios and/or USDA Corn Flakes.

This is also a win for American Farmers, instead of being paid by the government NOT to produce, they could easily become part of this program.

Another use for bumper crops and crop rotations.

Everyone wins!

There, the poor have just been fed by the Taxpayer.

They are stuck eating beans and rice you say? Think of it this way, every cent you give to the Federal Food Program is bread taken from your Child's mouth.

But of course you aren't suppose to take into account the needs of the people who actually pay for all this.

Of course there are many ways for the food to be taken advantage by irresponsible parents, but if just ONE child eats because of these reforms it is worth it.

Right?

They all get a pass for being victims of those evil predatory males.

Why, if it wasn’t for all that toxic masculinity, the world would be just fine!

Work is good for people. Way better than sitting on the roof smoking weed.

As someone whose family, for a short period of time, relied on government assistance growing up (food coupons), I am going to say that welfare qualification is FAR too lenient. My first job working at a grocery store in a minority-heavy neighborhood confirmed that. The cars that these recipients drove were well above what working people could afford.

Welfare should be doled out judiciously to those who truly need it, on a temporary basis, and should only support a very spartan, subsistence lifestyle. Anyone with anything other than basic subscriptions, such as cable and phone service, should be disqualified. More than one vehicle owned should disqualify as well. Anyone who smokes are drinks on their own dime should be disqualified. Purchase of expensive hair extensions, car accessories (like ghetto wheels), and tattoos should also disqualify.

And some level of at least menial work should be demonstrated, even if it's picking up trash in their neighborhood.

from what you wrote, I’d say no cable tv subscriber. and I agree all these folks getting nails and hari done, tattoos etc and yet get food or other govt helps? no way, cut them off.

I don’t agree with them only getting certain brands or types food only because that is constantly putting dollars into a specific company’s pocket.

I’m sick of seeing the huge “feeding america” etc food bank trailers driving around daily knowing their are govt monies tied to them even if it is indirectly. Those industores used to be small but under obama they seemed to have become a huge industry.

I agree while collecting any sort of govt assistance people need to be working or documented voluneteering. I know too many people sitting around saying they can;t work when really they can be doing some thing productive for themselves, family, people around them...

The only reason I listed cable subscription is that many people roll telephone service in with it. And a telephone is crucial for finding a job in this age. But it should be local channels only, which runs under $25 with most cable providers.

If a cell phone is in the picture, then no home phone subscription. And only a very basic, no-data plan.

NJ cured that one before the 1996 Welfare Reform Act (signed by Clinton after vetoing at least 3 times, but wanted to get re-elected) by informing welfare moms, they got paid for 2 kids, period, oh, and when that youngest (of the 2 kids) reached 2, they had to go to work!

Guess what happened - these gals suddenly found birth control AND then they got jobs!

.....but that was before we got “sensitive” about such harsh facts!
