Shomari Legghette, charged with Chicago commander's murder, compares himself to Trayvon Martin

Shomari Legghette, charged with murder in the February killing of Chicago police Cmdr. Paul Bauer, compared himself to Trayvon Martin in a jailhouse interview with Chicago magazine.

The magazine details Legghette and Bauer’s lives leading up to the beloved police commander’s slaying.

Legghette, a four-time felon, does not go into much detail about the fatal confrontation with Bauer, but said he’s not guilty of murder in Bauer’s shooting.

“Would Trayvon Martin have been guilty with George Zimmerman if it had went the other way?” Legghette said.

On Feb. 13, officers patrolling Lower Wacker Drive because of a recent shooting and drug sales approached Legghette, but he took off running.

Bauer, downtown for a meeting, heard a radio call of a fleeing suspect and spotted Legghette running nearby moments later.

Bauer chased Legghette to the top of a stairwell outside the Thompson Center and attempted to detain him. The two struggled and ended up on a landing below.

Legghette, who was wearing body armor, drew a handgun and fired seven shots, fatally wounding Bauer.

Beside making the comparison with Martin, Legghette defended his use of body armor — which is banned for felons.

“If you swim, you should have you some scuba gear. If you play football, you got on a helmet and pads. If you’re in the streets, you gotta secure yourself. The police have on body armor. Why is it that the police can wear body armor and the citizens can’t?” Legghette said.

In reality, a self-damning comparison.

Trayvon Martin?
He means the thug that got shot trying to murder someone?
Probably an apt comparison.

Average IQ for the demographic is 85.

This one is substantially below that average, I think.

Had to look up the distribution curve.

It is sobering to think that 16% of the population has an IQ of 85 or lower.

Actually not sobering, but scary.

“Would Trayvon Martin have been guilty with George Zimmerman if it had went the other way?”

How can we answer a question which is itself nonsensical?

I believe the US Army will not take anyone with an IQ of 83 or below under the belief that such people simply cannot be trained for any job. Think about that.

Yes, because Martin had actually disengaged, he was free and clear but chose to turn back to co front the creepy ass cracker, or whatever he called Zimmerman in that phone call.

Martin is responsible for the resulting violent confrontation. That he chose to turn back to confront the other shows intent. He attacked Zimmerman. Being disrespected is not a valid motive for such an action.

Martin didn’t die because he was black, because Zimmerman set out to kill a black man, but I would argue that he died because of his blackness, or his sense of personal offendedness he seems to have cultivated to the point of being willing to physically attack another..

"... his sense of personal offendedness he seems to have cultivated to the point of being willing to physically attack another."

I would disagree with your statement. It's not cultivated, it's instinctive.
Look up scare pranking on Youtube. The "fight or flight" reflex seems to trend by race.

Prank scare a white adult male, he'll jump back, squealing. Prank scare a black adult male, and there is a HIGH likelihood you'll get a fist in the face. It's a reaction at the animal level.

I know, to point it out is racist.

Watch Youtube. That's the way to bet. I find it embarrassing and annoying.

It's why I'm super aware of the possibility and have a heightened situational awareness when I'm carrying. I don't want to give an M1911 double tap to some prankster.

(I'm a big fan of my old Officer's Model Double Eagle.) I'd carry a Ma Deuce if I could work out the holster...
