Paul Ryan had all-star talent as a legislator and fundraiser, and the realization of his career-long goal of tax reform is a monumental legacy.
He has been an adept policy wonk, and his work as the pre-eminent Obamacare critic on Capitol Hill was nothing short of inspirational, most notably in 2010 as the ranking member of the House Budget Committee.
That year at the bipartisan White House Summit on Health Care, Ryan put on a savant-level clinic on sound economic policy and on the harmful ramifications the Democratic health care bill would have. He spoke with analytical flourish but kept his logic simple, such as when he admonished President Obama, Hiding spending does not reduce spending. He was both heartfelt and professorial at once, and during the televised event, President Obama, a lecturer if there ever was one, seemed to morph from commander in chief into a first-year pupil.

Oh, NOW they love Paul Ryan.
Utter RINO nonsense.
He’s a BIG SPENDER who never passed a budget under regular order.
I resent the hell out of the GOP but I don’t have a big problem with Ryan. It’s not his fault so many GOP House and Senate members refused to fulfill their campaign promises. His career was over once we got to the end of 2017 and ObamaCare was still intact despite seven years of GOP promises to repeal it.
Setting the stage for influencing who replaces him.
Ryan failed at Obamacare repeal and failed at controlling spending. Credit for the tax reform package, but let us not forget it is only temporary (5 years) for individuals. Hoping for Meadows or Scalise to replace him. Keep in mind the position of Speaker does not have to come from the ranks of the House; it can be a non-elected citizen.
Is it just that darn hard to get a Speaker like Newt was in 95?
I’ll bet we will get a lot of “tough talkers” in the House that will float all types of names, and then vote for the next lightweight with an aw-shucks smile.
Paul Ryan is single handedly responsible for ruining the repeal legislation of Obama health care by drafting a failed bill which would have lined the pockets of insurance companies and screwed ordinary Americans. Ryan’s funding comes from Insurance companies and his wifes democrat family.
Because Ryans initiative failed to pass, ruining the Presidents initiative to repeal and replace, expand the insurance market to a national one instead of just in state,Ryan realizes that his political career is going nowhere, and he has only minimal support from the very lobbyists whom he failed.
Good riddance to Ryan. Now how to get rid of Yertle the Turtle in the Senate , who is so crooked in his wifes family dealings in Red China. McConnell has to go, he influences the GOP against PDJT and the will of the People.Look at how McConnell has slow walked the Senate confirmation processes. What a dastardly idiot he is.
Ryan did not wield his gavel wisely. That’s why he has to go. If he wielded it wisely he would have supported PDJT and the
Republican Freedom Caucus, that’s what the PEOPLE want. Supporting lobbyists to the detriment of ordinary Americans is how Ryan created his own political demise.
Perhaps Scalise might do better. But we need a real fire breather who will support the President completely.
Obamacare endures, 'critics' notwithstanding.
The Boston Herald is praising Paul Rino that is all you need know.
Its called cleaning the swamp. Good riddance to Ryan, no friend to conservatives or Trumpsters.
I am disturbed by all of the cheering going around here over Ryan’s retirement. This is not good news and the ideological purists need to keep their dogma on a leash for a minute while considering the real world consequences of this. Ryan’s departure just drastically raised the odds of losing the House in November. Which in turn drastically increases the likelihood of impeachment.
"You'll get better health care and it will cost less!" WTF is that? That's like me telling people they can rent luxury apartments in Trump Tower for $350 per month.
The Herald is not the Globe.
I’m stunned that people are praising him when he didn’t even want Trump elected. He preferred Hillary winning. Remember he said, “I’m just not there yet.”
PDJT was trying to “get along” with Congress , and was counselled that the Ryan bill would be amended once it got out of cloture.
It was the Freedom Caucus who managed to put the kybosh on it, Ryan had to withdraw it after the Freedom Caucus conferred with PDJT.
Ryan is a wolf in sheeps clothing, now discovered , he is in full retreat.Too bad he didn;t do it right after PDJT was elected, the country would be much better off.
Maybe that he was tired of the toxic environment in DC. Maybe that he was called a traitorous RINO and told to go away a few too many times and he decided to accede to the demands of FReepers?
