Cause of death released for woman found near Bay Trail
Los Altos Town Crier ^ | April 9, 2018 | Grace Hase

The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s office recently ruled that the Mountain View woman whose body was found floating in the water along the Bay Trail in Sunnyvale last December died of drowning.

According to an autopsy report medical examiner Dr. Joseph O’Hara signed off on March 28, Chuchu Ma had “multiple minor blunt force injuries and pulmonary edema consistent with drowning.”

But while Ma’s cause of death may be known, the manner of her death remains undetermined, perhaps indefinitely. Monday morning, Capt. Shawn Ahearn of the Sunnyvale Department of Pubilc Safety said Ma’s case is now considered closed.

The 23-year-old Google engineer was found in the water Dec. 7 and pronounced dead at the scene. The autopsy report, obtained by the Town Crier, noted that witnesses saw Ma entering the water the previous day and that a 911 call showed her to be disoriented. The report states that Ma’s “confused state is highly suggestive of psychotic behavior and may explain her entry into the water.”

However, nothing in Ma’s medical records revealed that she had expressed suicidal thoughts.

The autopsy report ruled out any sexual violence against Ma, based on the lack of physical injuries.

The toxicology report also came back clean for any alcohol, illegal drugs or prescription drugs. Only caffeine was found in her system. In December, a representative from the county’s medical examiner-coroner’s office said that the autopsy and toxicology reports were supposed to take four to 12 weeks. Instead, it took the county four months to release Ma’s cause of death.

Nick Carraway posted the original article about this young woman's death back on December 10, 2017: "Google Engineer Found Dead in Water Along Sunnyvale Trail."

The Public Safety finding seems very weird to me: she had multiple blunt force injuries and pulmonary edema consistent with drowning. How did she get blunt force injuries? If you walk into the water to drown yourself, how would you get blunt force injuries? Was she striking her own head against rocks? This is the first that I've heard about witnesses showing her entering the water in a disoriented, confused state the day before she died.

Her case is now considered closed? After blunt force injuries to the victim, her drowning, and the "manner of her death" is undetermined. Why would they close the case so quickly?

Something doesn't smell right here.

Pinging to those who replied to the December 2017 article (at least those who were compassionate and not snarky). Follow-up information for you on this strange case.

"veracious" wrote at the time "Covert Google op? Inside of covert Google ops?" That doesn't sound implausible to me at all. Did Google get to the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s office?

"black dog" wrote at the time "Awaiting autopsy results pending Google’s approval to do so." Also not implausible.

"Jack Black" wrote at the time "I suspect foul play." That seems to have been ruled out, but no explanation of her death is proffered by the Coroner's office!

In the moments following a drowning, the lungs fill with water and a body sinks before it then rises again, right?

So, during the time her body was submerged, her face might have suffered abrasions from being dragged along rocks and other debris.

NO evidence she was sexually assaulted. This is a suicide. Case closed.

The levees typically don’t have a lot of rocks. The running and biking paths are generally wide, flat, and well maintained. You’d pretty much have to intentionally go into the water which she did the previous day. It sounds like she might have had a medical issue based on her bizarre behavior the day before, but there is no explanation of her blunt force injuries, her manner of death, or the closing of the case by the coroner’s office.

Abrasions maybe. But that’s a far cry from “blunt force injuries” (plural - injuries). I think of “blunt force injury” in crime, falling off a ladder, falling on the street and hitting your head on the curb, and a vehicle wreck. Look at the pic I posted of the fire truck removing her body — no rocks around there to fall on.

I recall the all-nighters on end in engineering school and being hopped up on caffeine. Then after 36 hours of being awake trying to go to sleep. I would have crazy nightmares that seemed real, and would thrash about.

I don’t recall now exactly, but I think I feared I might hurt myself or others. I even thought about making some sort of restraints for myself - but usually just after I awoke from a nightmare. (slip knots on the ends of four ropes tied to the bed - but then how do I get out!!??) Once I was awake I was fine.

I imagine being a young Google person requires lots of sleepless nights too. I’m glad those days are behind me. (Mostly)

I can imagine that falling off the trail, down that steep embankment, would cause minor blunt force injuries, as mentioned in the article.

I’ve had many a walk along this trail at lunchtime, when you get big clumps of people talking to each other and ignoring the traffic around them, when I’ve been wary of being knocked down the embankment.

An ex girlfriend of mine died the same way. Black ice in front of a bridge, went into the water and drowned. She was a competitive swimmer, too. Idaho Falls, Christmas Eve, 1975.
