The Government Shouldn’t Value Bears Over People

King Cove, Alaska

I watched my daughter nearly die in a plane crash—because of a misguided view of how best to protect nesting swans and foraging bears. She was in a single-engine plane with four others in 2010, when it was forced to the ground by a sudden downdraft while approaching our town’s little airstrip. Imagine standing by helplessly as your child’s plane collides with the runway. Thankfully, the pilot was able to pull the nose up at the last moment, which prevented a catastrophe and saved all on board.

Almost every family here has a similar tale of a close call or tragedy. There are no roads leading to King Cove, a fishing village of about 1,000 people 625 miles southwest of Anchorage, so frequent flying is a must. But the village’s short, 3,000-foot gravel runway sits in a wind tunnel between volcanic mountains. Even worse, the airstrip is closed for an average of more than 100 days each year because of poor weather. That’s dangerous when someone has a serious medical need—a heart attack or childbirth—and needs to get to Anchorage.

The Cold Bay Airport, 18 miles away, has a 10,000-foot paved runway built to accommodate jet fighters. It is closed fewer than 10 days a year. The trouble is getting from King Cove to Cold Bay.

When weather makes it dangerous to fly by small plane or go by boat, the only lifeline available is the helicopter rescue crews at U.S. Coast Guard Station Kodiak. For years they have been our guardian angels, descending in all conditions, and at great personal risk, to ferry the sick and injured to Cold Bay—at a cost to federal taxpayers of up to $210,000 a mission.

A few miles of road—single-lane, gravel, restricted use—could change that.

I am not subscribing to the WSJ to read this story so I’m not sure where she’s going with the article.

Last I heard, Zinke had approved a plan working out something to get the road built - I hope those plans have not gone awry:

Secretary Zinke Approves Initial Plan to Build a Life-Saving Road for Alaska Native Village of King Cove
https://www.doi.gov/pressreleases/secretary-zinke-approves-initial-plan-build-life-saving-road-alaska-native-village

This was a reversal of what Sally Jewell said:

Feds to Alaskans: No road for humans, lots of land for animals
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/02/26/fed-government-to-alaskans-road-animals.html

During an August visit to Alaska, Jewell was told that building a road that connects King Cove and Cold Bay was vital. But in December, Jewell rejected the road saying it would jeopardize waterfowl in the refuge.

“She stood up in the gymnasium and told those kids, ‘I’ve listened to your stories, now I have to listen to the animals,” Democratic state Rep. Bob Herron told a local television station. “You could have heard a pin drop in that gymnasium.”

There’s never enough of “other people’s money!” There’s always a project that “absolutely needs funding!” Say hello to $21 trillion in debt!

My human United States government should value humans, in particular United States citizens and legal residents of the United States. Second, it should value the written Constitution of the United States of America. That is its job.

The reason why China is now pulling ahead of us economically is because they don’t allow a handful of self-haters, like our environmentalists, shut down economic growth. Perhaps they’ve gone a bit too far in the other direction, but now that they’ve achieved their growth goals, they can work on cleaning up stuff...which they are doing, slowly though.

“The Government Shouldn’t”??? Do you think “government” cares what YOU think they should or shouldn’t do?

What is “government”? There is no “government”. There are only government officials, bureaucrats, and workers. What do they think about every day? ONE THING: how can I make more money doing what I’m doing? Answer: GROW MY department, MY bureaucracy and SPEND YOUR MONEY AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

Standard government budget practice: if you don’t spend all your allotment, you’ll get less next year.

That is ALL “government” cares about. Government is the MOTHER of ALL GREED for YOUR MONEY.

NUKE the unconstitutional 80% of the $4 trillion federal government.

MAGA by RESTORING our Free Constitutional Republic.

The Government Shouldn’t Value Bears Over People

Why not?

Look how it values Bald Eagles over unborn American Citizens...

I'd like to thank the United States Government for protecting me and my kind.

You see, 40 years ago, my odds of making it out of the egg, alive, were very poor; about 80% of us died.

But a lady discovered our plight and wrote a book that addressed our problem,
and, in 1972, a law was ammended protecting us even further. (http://www.fws.gov/midwest/eagle/protect/laws.html)

What I find strange is that the same government passed a law the very next year that allowed for killing
of unborn, and apparently unwanted, humans.  Little ones still nestled safely in their Mother's womb.
Around 25% of them are dying before birth - on average nearly 3,300 - every day of the year.

I hear that by now, somewhere around 58 MILLION of them have perished.
Wouldn't that kind of mess up the humans plans for growth, and welfare, and
retirement?

Strange birds; these Homo Sapiens.  Perhaps they'll come to their senses
before they are ALL dead!

Most Americans do not realize that Alaska has almost no road system. If only environmentalists were required to live in the places they make rules for. So few of them know squat about the things they think they understand.

In my many years, most environmentalists make rules on how to milk a bull, but not a one has ever tried.

Let the locals put in a road for free, the Goobermint will cost a few billion to do the same thing. The problem is doing it the government way, not the road itself.
