World powers show off advanced weaponry in Syrian war

As tension mounts between Russia and the West, Syria’s brutal seven-year civil war has become an arena for world powers to display their advanced weaponry and ability to project their military might.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin said his country had tested nearly 215 advanced weapons in Syria since his country directly intervened in the conflict to support Syrian President Bashar Assad in September 2015.

Russia has shown off both its Kalibr cruise missiles, launched from warships and submarines in the Mediterranean and Caspian Seas, and the ability of its Tu 160 bombers to fly an 8,000-mile strike round trip mission against Islamic State.

The United States, France and Britain last week launched 105 missiles on three on Syrian chemical weapons facilities without any aircraft entering Syrian air space or coming within range of its anti-air systems.

Turkey first opposed, and then welcomed the strikes, calling them an appropriate response to the chemical attack on the town of Douma on April 7.

The strikes were more comprehensive than the U.S. attack last year on a single Syrian chemical facility in which 59 Tomahawk missiles were fired at Al Shayrat airfield from two U.S. warships in the eastern Mediterranean.

Think that this is a Kemalist source. From it's content it is outside of Turkey itself.

This article is written from the perspective of someone who knows military weapons (ours and the Russians), and understands the attack we made on Assad's chemical weapons installations.

It is worth the time to read.

This is why we are so involved in wars. Low risk to our troops. I said, when we took out Saddam, that the reason the anti-war protests could not pick up any steam is that unlike the Vietnam war, they couldn’t build up support on stacks of body bags coming home.

Fact is that if the US can wage these little “police action wars” with low risk to our troops, they will not end and might even pick up. If we can send our drones anywhere while they are being piloted by some guys in South Dakota, low risk means high involvement.

I was lambasted a few days ago when I suggested that these skirmishes take place from time-to-time for the big world players back room agree to have a proving ground in some poor suckers country. Sometimes it’s Vietnam, sometimes it’s Iraq, sometimes it’s Syria. Collateral civilian damage and death becomes acceptable to both or more sides, although not intended. I can’t tell you how much I hate it if this is a situation that later gets proven as fact.

I am convinced the chemical weapons were in fact used and that Assad did it. And Russia’s actions indicate that they knew about it. And that we gave them warning we were going to destroy the weapons.

Nothing in the Middle East is simple.

Tomahawk cruise missiles aren't aircraft? I know what they mean but I think it would be more accurate to say "...without manned aircraft..."

I found this interesting because of the source. I suspect this is written by a NATO trained officer that was caught in the purge connected with the (faux?) coup that took place in 2016.

It is well written and much more apparently accurate description than what we normally see in US Press.

The difference between Nam and Iraq: the ability to name the enemy.

In the first conflict, we were able to name our enemy with precision; in the second we refuse, on political and social justice grounds, to name anyone other than a leader or a country (neither of which are the true enemy).

We won the war in Nam, but lost it at home. Now, in the ME, we are losing in both places ... because our ‘leadership’ remains politically correct and refuses to name the enemy.

BTW: forget the drones the Russians have found an effective method of jamming them. they are now militarily useless.

Let’s not forget the possibility that this may also be used as a demonstration of effectiveness for those countries interested in buying our toys. I wonder if anyone was invited to watch from the gallery in the command center?

So negative toward the US.

We have almost completely won the war against ISIS in both Iraq and in Syria, after Obama effectively conceding both.

Only because of our “ally” (wink, headshake) Turkey’s invasion of Afrin, is ISIS still alive in Syria.

Turkey neither is nor ever was a real ally. They used NATO to acquire a military and trained some great soldiers, most of the good ones were purged in 2016.

Turkey had practiced ethnic cleansing, massacre and Genocide against all minorities from the beginning.

It makes me very angry to hear people talk about the US losing our relationship with Turkey because of the Kurds. That is just BS.

Only for now and on some fronts. We still use B-52’s, but not for everything.

McCain thinks he knows who the enemy is. That’s why he runs guns to the Jihadists.

The CIA also thinks they know who the enemy is. That’s why they run guns to a different set of jihadists.

The Pentagon also thinks they know who the enemy is. That’s why they run guns to a yet another different set of jihadists.

The Likud also thinks they know who the enemy is. That’s why they run guns to a yet another different set of jihadists.

Erdogan is OUR Islamic enemy masquerading as an allied Nato member. The Kurds have been our greatest Alli throughout all our involvements in the Middle East. 'None' have fought and sacrificed so bravely to assist and protect our troops... and on their own consistent at taking out ISIS from the get go.

Assad did it? His weaponeers must be true military geniuses.

In December of 1915 at Ypres the Germans released 88 tons of gas from 3000 cylinders. It was a far more deadly chlorine-phosgene mix. 69 were killed and 1069 were wounded. The Germans released it in the very gas friendly wet environment of Belgium in December.

Now Assad, famous for being -far- more efficient then any German ever dreamed of, uses a mere TWO cylinders of chlorine and nerve gas to kill the same 70. It is a near 100% fatal rate. No thousands of badly wounded being evacuated to western hospitals are anywhere to be seen. And the nerve gas is some advanced variety that kills the victim, yet none of the rescuers are affected in the slightest. The only protection they need is a bandana and a bottle of water.

This is a third rate propaganda effort. I miss the days when they respected us enough to at least put some effort into the war propaganda.

Bottom line, our bombing was celebrated by the jihadi rebels.

http://www.philly.com/philly/news/A_renewed_campaign_to_keep_historic_Olympia_afloat.html

A cool 100 million was blown out the wazzoo in this attack -supporting- Al Qeida, the organization that brought us 9/11.
Meanwhile the USS Olympia, a national treasure that fired the opening shots of the Spanish American war in Manila Bay (Gridley you may fire when ready), the ship that brought the Unknown Soldier home from France, hasn’t had a dry dock session in 70 years. It needs a 20 million dollar maintenance session to preserve it for the future, but not a penny can be found for THAT.

The Navy ok’ed the museum to sink it as a reef. They are struggling for her not to be used in a sinkex... and we just pissed away 100 million plus on the goat humper rebels.
