That phrase did not have the force of law, and legal scholars today do not agree with you. Legal scholars are split as to whether those remarks were made in dicta. Most accept it as binding. The Justice Department guidelines for accepting clemency petitions requires that the petitioner "has accepted responsibility for his or her criminal conduct..."

Wasn’t Nixon granted a pardon without being charged for anything?

It’s ironic how many ‘lawyers’ don’t respect the law.

Sounds like obvious grounds to impeach the judges.

I think there's hope if we move away from
legal positivism in favor of
natural law theory. Everybody says the great maze of legal formalisms around us is the last word on whatever subjects they address, but who looks at the law in light of a higher purpose, anymore?

“A federal appeals court said this week it will appoint a lawyer to argue that former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaios contempt of court conviction should remain on his record despite President Trumps pardon. “
“DJT should pardon Sheriff Joe.”
Again?
Did the dead 9th Circus judge also concur with the majority?

A President’s power to pardon is ABSOLUTE, and no Federal Court has a say in the matter.
See Article II of the Constitution.
Then impeach and hang these judges.

What? After they’ve f@#$ed the law so many times, so many ways, now they’re going to respect it?

Nope. A pardon means it never happened. Nope, a pardon means that the President, or governor as the case may be, forgives the crime and waives any remaining penalty for it. If it means the conviction never happened then there are no Fifth Amendment protections and a person could be tried again for the same offense. But a person who has been pardoned cannot be tried again because they were already convicted for the crime.

Even lawyers sometimes just-plain-want-their-way, but they are required to couch it in a certain formal language.
