Dutch Probe ‘Appalling’ Euthanasia of Dementia Patient

(AP) — In a rare series of moves, Dutch authorities are investigating whether doctors may have committed crimes in five euthanasia cases, including the deaths of two women with advanced Alzheimer’s disease. In one of the Alzheimer’s cases, which prosecutors began probing in September, a physician drugged the patient’s coffee without her knowledge and then had the woman physically restrained while delivering the fatal injection. The ongoing criminal investigation is the first since the Netherlands made it legal for doctors to kill patients at their request in 2002.

Dutch prosecutors announced they were examining four other cases last month, including the death of another Alzheimer’s patient who “lacked the capacity to express her own will,” according to a statement from the prosecutor’s office. A spokesperson said that specific criminal charges, if any, would be determined only after the investigations are finished. Several legal experts said that if doctors were found to have killed patients without their explicit request, they could potentially be charged with murder.

The investigations highlight the difficulties doctors face in handling euthanasia requests for those who later develop dementia. Mental decline can eventually make patients unable to understand the significance of their earlier demand to be killed, and as their brain changes, so can their personality and desires.

Seem that Hitler and the Nazis had a lasting effect on the outlook of the Dutch.

Government putting citizens to death. It’s happening now, has happened in the past, and will happen as long as government is allowed to usurp the power.

Bastards in government should not be allowed to have the power. Too late.

The case they describe in the story is just flat out murder - assisted by her family, ironically enough.
I was thinking maybe it was elderly women without anyone to look after them that they were preying on.

I remember thirty years ago reading of elderly patients there who refused to go to the doctors as they feared the doctor might take it upon themselves to decide if the elderly had any “quality of life” left and kill them.

Dutch authorities are investigating whether doctors may have committed crimes in five euthanasia cases, including the deaths of two women with advanced Alzheimer’s disease.

Advanced Alzheimer’s patients can be very difficult to deal with and can use up a lot of resources and injure staff on a regular basis.

I would not be surprised if these patients were ‘euthanized’ because they were inconvenient patients.

The soil of the Netherlands was made rich with the blood of over 7,600 Canadian men who died liberating that country.
Close to 75 years later, it seems that their sacrifice was in vain. How far the Dutch have fallen.

I care for my mom with Alzheimer’s. If you had asked her before if she would want to live the way she is now, she might well have said no. Right now she has the sense of a two year old but considers herself perfectly normal. So of course she wants to live. She wants her food, her books, her coloring, her tv, etc. It’s a natural instinct. Saddest part: she was a very religious woman and believed in heaven and an afterlife. Now she doesn’t remember any of that and doesn’t know what happens after you pass. Also, she was a thinking, reading, deep conservative, and now she reads the LA Times and says “This Trump sounds like a real moron.”

Now that people are free to choose suicide, it is up to the smart people to decide how developmentally-challeneged people would choose.

Next it will be people unable to earn a living wage.

After that, people who think homosexuality is wrong, or who believe in the 2nd amendment, or who are overweight, or who aren’t handsome or pretty enough, or who aren’t intelligent enough. All the untermensch as determined by the smart people.

Welcome to Nazism 2.0

Shocked, shocked to find out there is euthanasia going on in the Netherlands.

They are depraved, and proud of it.

That’s the progression to the goal. The people pushing for that grim reality have no sense of the immoralityof it, they just need to gradually desensitize the masses.

In nature the ill and infirm don’t last too long. Native Americans understood the needs of the many and left the aged encamped st the mercy of a natural ending, which often ended violently.

To be honest, I don’t want a lingering death, nor be left to sit in a facility without a cognizant mind.

There’s a lot to be said for a quick and mostly painless death. Anything less is suffering.

Even if you say there's "a lot to be said for a quick and painless death," the government should not be involved AT ALL. It should be strictly DIY.

But you say you "belong" to yourself, eh? Yes: then if you want to commit suicide, go right on ahead. Private decision, private act. But if you turn it into a public issue by trying to legalize it and medicalize it, you're suborning very serious ethical violations by the legal and medical profession which would make these professions an existential threat to society.

Law and Government are supposed to protect your "Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness," and Life comes first both logically and chronologically, since without Life there is no more liberty and no more "pursuit." Thus legal euthanasia perversely undermines the very reason for Law. Similarly, the Medical profession is supposed to protect the patient's health: and nobody is healthier dead.

So go right on ahead and kill yourself (I am speaking sarcastically: please don't to any such thing) --- but above all, don't corrupt me, or your family, or your heirs, or your doctor, or your lawyers, or your lawmakers and government, the major institutions of society, in doing so.

You believe in autonomy? Then be decent and do it autonomously. Ultimately, nobody can stop you making that choice.
