Manchin becomes second Dem to back Pompeo
The Hill ^ | April 23, 2018 | Jordain Carney

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said on Monday that he will vote for CIA Director Mike Pompeo to be the next secretary of State, making him the second Democrat to support Pompeo's nomination.

"After meeting with Mike Pompeo, discussing his foreign policy perspectives, & considering his distinguished time as CIA Director & his exemplary career in public service, I will vote to confirm Mike Pompeo to be our next Secretary of State," Manchin said in a tweet.

Pompeo likely already had the votes to be confirmed by the full Senate. With Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) expected to oppose him, Pompeo needed one Democratic vote to win a simple majority. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) became the first Democrat, on Thursday, to say she would vote for him, securing Pompeo a 50th vote.

But Manchin's support provides a boost of momentum for Pompeo ahead of a historic showdown on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Pompeo is expected to fail to receive a favorable recommendation from the panel during a vote scheduled for early Monday evening, where Republicans hold a one-seat majority on the committee.

But Republicans are still expected to bring Pompeo's nomination up on the floor this week.

Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, could either send his nomination to the floor with an unfavorable recommendation or no recommendation.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) could also try to discharge the nomination from committee, but that gives Democrats the leverage to potentially filibuster Pompeo because the move would require 60 votes.

Several other key Democrats remain on the fence over Pompeo's nomination.

Heitkamp and Manchin were two of the 16 minority party senators who supported Pompeo’s nomination last year to be CIA director. Six remain on the fence: Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Angus King (I-Maine).

GOP Sen. Jeff Flake (Ariz.) has also said he's undecided as he seeks more information from Pompeo.

Paul says it’s because Pompeo supported the Iraq War which seems idiotic and don’t know about Flake other than he lives up to his name most of the time.

Why are Rs voting no?

Corker and Flake, because they will go to any length to destroy Trump's Presidency. Paul, because he is so "principled" he is willing to betray his party and his electorate.

The new standard for confirmation is, “if I were President is that who I’d choose”. Hopefully that standard is used by the Repukes too

Thanks Joe. You are still going to lose in November but at least you have reclaimed a bit of your dignity.

“Why are Rs voting no?”

To f*ck Trump! Any questions? They want to return to “ the way things have always been,” where they get paid under the table for doing NOTHING for the citizens of this country. And it will continue to be this way until a way is found to take away their money/money sources.

I believe that the Democrats are making a mistake. This move is nothing but a Senatorial Parlor Trick aimed at their base and it won’t work. More than likely, they are going to alienate the voters that they will really need in November. Their base have nowhere to go and they can’t be more motivated than they already are. My guess is that this is being demanded by the big pocket Democrat donors. Will these big donors hold back writing checks over this issue? I doubt it.

Trump needs to have some “closed door meetings” with his GOPE protagonists and tell them that he will actively campaign against them in November if the don't get with his program. And he can start with Thom Tillis!

exactly, which is why the Dem media is poo pooing the potential N. Korean breakthroughs. Any success there and the Dems are toast for going against a major deal.
