The use of that term gives the whole thing away. Can anyone name a single hockey player who is "openly heterosexual?" Probably not -- because normal people in hockey don't wear their sexuality on their sleeves.

A hockey referee who presents himself as "openly gay" isn't a professional hockey referee at all. He's a professional homosexual who happens to be a hockey referee.
