Mock Shooting Alarms Crowd, Triggers Police Response At Movie Theater In CT

STAMFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) – The sound of gunfire and someone shouting “Everybody down, everybody” shocked moviegoers sitting in the lobby of the Bow Tie Majestic 6 movie theaters Sunday night, but the incident appears to have been a juvenile prank.

Five children ranging in ages from 10 to 16 were arrested and face both criminal charges and potential school disciplinary action after police say they used toy cap guns to stage the mock attack in Stamford, reports CBS2’s Tony Aiello.

Police say three members of the group had noisy toy guns and fired them in the theater while shouting “everyone down” before fleeing the theater.

“They let the rounds off, then they yell out, ‘get down, get down, get down.’ Me, if I’m in that theater, I’m thinking there’s a robbery going down and I’m going to protect myself,” Sgt. Joe Kennedy told Aiello. “Just shock and disbelieve, you know, a lot of fear.”

Start with "what you would do if this were your child". Then pull the plug on TV's, confiscate smart phones, replace them will plain cell phones for emergency's only.

There is a life out there without smart phones....and there are still parents that teach their children right from wrong....

Since this was in the People’s Republic of Connecticut, the gun-free theater-goers were lucky.

>>Start with “what you would do if this were your child”.<<

Here in Texas they parents be burying them. I have no idea where the kids go the idea this would be “fun” but this certainly does put a big hole in their overinflated walkout egos.

That's an excellent way for a juvenile prankster to get shot.

The kids need to learn that they risk their LIVES doing this.

Pull that crap when we are in the theater and these young idiots would most likely be dead. Our local cineplex of choice is NOT gun free. At least not when we are there.

They have a really good fish and chips dish, too.

School disciplinary action? What do the schools have to do with this? It occurred in a public movie theater on a Sunday night.

Criminal and/or civil charges should be pursued, but directly involving their schools in their punishment is over-reach as far as I am concerned.

“They let the rounds off, then they yell out, ‘get down, get down, get down.’

That's a good way to get shot. For real.

Its a prank, and a good one, from some high-spirited young people. It seemed like a good idea to them.

What, are you gonna shoot somebody who shoots a cap pistol? You cant tell the difference between a cap pistol and a real pistol? You cant see it is a 10-year-old knuckleheaded kid?

If you are going to conceal carry you gotta be in control of your emotions and pay attention to your surroundings!

Totally agree. FreeRepublic Armchair Rambos are hilarious when they talk about returning fire in a crowded theater.
The first thought should be getting out of there and getting to safety.
It is even better comedy when the discussion turns to “tacticool response” to a 5th-grader with a toy cap gun. LOL.

The first thought should be getting out of there and getting to safety.

Why, if you and olepap have keenly sensed good natured high-jinks going on? You know, telling a child with a toy gun in the dark from an active shooter; the skill sorely lacking in many police shootings.

And if it is an active shooter, why would I be jammed at the exits with a hundred other folks, waiting to get mowed down? You're damned right I'd be shooting back. Call me a Rambo or any name you want.

Yet shooting at exactly WHOM in a darkened movie theater?
The person four rows behind where the sound might have come?

CCW is a truly great thing and undoubtedly prevents countless crimes.
There are scenarios where quickly exiting and obtaining cover is ideal.

It would demand optimal conditions to halt a threat in a dark theater unless the nutjob was literally standing motionless five feet away shooting moviegoers. These seem to be challenging distinctions to make (in complete darkness) when 99% of those nearby would be fellow innocent folks.

I have no doubts discretion and level-headedness are required components for responsible CCW.

However, the liberal argument has always been two-pronged. Either it’s just too haaard to fight back, or blood will run in the streets.

In the Aurora shooting the killer walked in through an exit door and stood at the front. Everyone could see him; they thought he had dressed up for the movie. Then, he shot people like it was a clay pigeon gallery.

"...Aurora, CO v. Stamford, CT..."

Agreed, fair enough and I concur with your follow-up points.
A known shooter, still firing, silhouetted against a bright screen...is better to comprehend.
It seems the kids in Stamford, CT shot the toy cap guns, shouted at people, and then ran out of the theater.
