WASHINGTON — The Trump administration has proposed legislation that could triple rents on the poorest tenants in federally subsidized housing as part of a push to redefine housing assistance as a temporary benefit instead of the permanent source of shelter it has become for millions of poor people.
The legislation, spurred by Mr. Trump’s conservative budget director, Mick Mulvaney, and drafted by aides to Ben Carson, the secretary of housing and urban development, would also allow local governments to impose work requirements on tenants in public housing deemed fit for work.
The plan would also increase rents for elderly and disabled people after six years, agency officials said.
But the new rules would hit the poorest residents hardest, with minimum monthly rents in public housing developments and for recipients of Section 8 vouchers rising to $150 a month from $50.
The increases would affect about 712,000 families over the next several years, HUD officials said. Rent hikes would gradually be phased in for tenants based on their income and other provisions that could effectively limit the amount of time some tenants would be allowed to remain in government-funded housing.

Housing advocates and congressional Democrats immediately condemned it. “What pretends to be a hand up is really a foot in the back,” said Shamus Roller, the executive director of the National Housing Law Project.

Those that ‘need’ charity can rely upon ACTUAL charity of their family/friends/neighbors/church/etc., not property stolen in opposition of A1S8, 5th/9th/10th/13th.
Well, that’s one way to curb the consumption of cigarettes, liquor, drugs, tattoos, weaves, and manicures by Democrat voters.

Why I give no kudos to the reduction in the regulatory state, or the indiv. mandate...the ROOTS still exist and merely need a change in ‘leadership’ to begin anew.

The Times should promote a policy that if you have 2 or more unoccupied bedrooms in your home or apartment, you have to take in a homeless person or low income person.

Across a main street from our neighborhood is a neighborhood of condos. It turned black many years ago when the illegal Mexicans started moving into the old black neighborhood. I swear everyone there is on some kind of welfare....and it shows. What used to be a neighborhood of nicely upkept condos where families lived is now a ghetto. The ghetto bird flies overhead at least a few times a week.
Without HUD, welfare, etc. neighborhoods like this would go back to what they used to be....livable for ordinary people.

I was LIVING in a complex that went Section8. Wasn’t long before I was moving out w/ all the new (*surprise!) crime...cars vandalized, break-ins, etc.
Now? They’ve opened a ‘fast-pass’ (3 stops between either end) bus line from the same area to the mall....We don’t go to this mall much, if at all, anymore.
Do you equate social security payments for retirees ( not disability) to welfare payments? There is a fundamental difference.
If you can’t pay $150/month for your rent you aren’t really trying.
