Opinion: Bernie Sanders wants you to have a good job. But there's a catch.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., wants you to have a good job. He wants everyone to have a good job. In fact, he wants to guarantee it, and he's joined Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Cory Booker of New Jersey, two other potential Democratic presidential hopefuls, in proposing some sort of program to provide a highly paid job with the federal government to every American who wants one.

Unlike other ideas gaining vogue on the left, this actually seems vaguely centrist in its premise, despite its venerable socialist history. Democrats, after all, are the party of big entitlement spending, and Republicans are the party that says "Get a job!" If you smash those two things together, you get something that sounds kind of . . . moderate. At least until you get into the details.

Those details, unfortunately, are a devil.

Perhaps we can help the senator out. With two weeks of paid vacation, each worker would make roughly $31,000 a year. Add, conservatively, about $10,000 for benefits, and the total cost would be about $40,000.

The United States has between 25 million and 50 million workers making less than this total compensation package. Millions more are unemployed or fully out of the labor force. Assuming most of them did the rational thing and signed on, that would make for a $1 trillion to $2 trillion annual program - rivaling or exceeding our total expenditure on Social Security, with maybe Medicaid thrown in for good measure.

The impulse behind this idea is noble, and correct: that all Americans should be able to earn a decent living for themselves. But nobility can't take a backseat to practicality. This old socialist standby deserves to stay exactly where we left it — on the ash heap of history.

What would this loser know about jobs? He’s never had a real job in his pathetic, parasitic life.

Real jobs are created through the creation of wealth. Government jobs for all would require simply printing money.

“What would this loser know about jobs?”

Nothing. This guy was thrown out of a hippie commune. Do you know how hard you have to not work to get thrown out of a hippie commune? I don’t know having never lived in one, but I imagine you have to not work in a way impossible to imagine by anyone with a functioning brain.

The impulse behind this idea is noble

Jordan Peterson has made this point in a few recent videos. It's one of the reasons why the average person in the street knows that they hate Nazis and doesn't quite know if socialists are all that bad.

Nazis were about racial superiority. Pretty much everyone feels uncomfortable with this idea today. You say "Nazi" and just about everyone says "No". We all hate Nazis.

But Socialism? What does socialism want? What do they say they want? Well, they want to help poor people! Awwwwwwwwwwwwww! That's kind of awesome. Help poor people? Well, golly, I'd like to help poor people too. And right there you get a lot of average people in the street thinking that maybe socialism isn't that bad.

Well, their plan for jobs is going to cost YOU about $2 Trillion a year, and if it starts to go badly, the socialists are prepared to murder millions of people. They killed 100 million in the 20th century, and they are perfectly willing to do even more this century.

Socialism has an easy time "sounding noble". But the proper response is always: "No".

This is all we need - many thousands of additional, lifetime, must-be-promoted-within, cannot-be-fired-from, government jobs with 14 paid holidays, 3 weeks sick time, 3 weeks’ vacation time (to start), personal days, deluxe health insurance coverage, full defined benefit pensions, etc. Paid for by those of us who actually work.

A quick, simple look at the Soviet Union, Mao’s China, Cuba, Vietnam.... any of these and many others... will easily reveal what happens when the government ‘gives away’ jobs.

When one shops anymore, you see nothing but crap “Make in China”.

In every store. On every aisle. In every city, in every state, coast to coast.

“Made in China”.

This idea by the left is very powerful. The GOP must not sit back and let it sit.

They need to rally 100% behind Trump. Completely.

America needs to build up our own manufacturing once again.

Not China.

America.

It wouldn't surprise me if welfare recipients already collect nearly as much in benefits, tax free, without actually working at all. I can't see them eager to take part in such a program.

If the figure I saw for welfare recipients is correct (Unfortunately I can’ remember the exact number!), they would be taking a pay cut!
