The Wikipedia entry about Mrs. Grant reads: “According to Julia, “Eliza, Dan, Jule, and John belonged to me up to the time of President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.”"

Ah yes, how can you argue with Wikipedia?

Quotes attributed to Mrs. Grant about slaves usually come from "The Personal Memoirs of Julia Grant". That book wasn't published until the mid-1970's and is based on notes and diaries she had compiled for her autobiography. There are a number of in accuracies in it. Most biographies of Grant that I'm aware of, including Ron Chernow's biography published last year, agree that the slaves Mrs. Grant had use of actually belonged to her father. And there are a number of facts that support this. The first is, of course, had the slaves been the property of Julia Grant then they would have become the property of her husband upon marriage. If Grant freed the one slave he owned why would he not free the others? More importantly, as Chernow relates, Frederick Dent strongly disliked his son-in-law. He did not consider him a suitable match for his daughter and distrusted his abolitionist family. There is no way he would have placed four of his slaves in a position where they could have been emancipated on a whim.

But Mrs. Grant's claims of ownership are disputed by “some historians” who figure that in light of post-post-modern sensibilities it would be better if she didn't own slaves for the sake of her, and General Grant's, reputations.

For "some historians" read "virtually all historians". As for reputation, Grant's reputation as the most successful general of the war is secure.

I will give you some credit for not repeating the standard anti-Grant lie that he owned slaves until December 1865 or that he justified it by saying, "Good help is hard to find."

Right. And that is what D’Souza does: measure people of the 19th century by 21st century standards.

Actually I was referring to your labeling Lincoln a "white supremacist". Whatever other faults he may have had I don't recall D'Souza doing that.

Of course D’Souza doesn't do that. If he were to discuss Lincoln's racial statements and plans it would upend his (D’Souza’s) clever narrative that in the beginning Republicans were 100 percent pure.

So you feel obligated to pick up the slack of holding Lincoln to 21st Century standards for him? Not at all surprising.

“There is no way he would have placed four of his slaves in a position where they could have been emancipated on a whim.”

There are two views of Julia Dent Grant.

One view sees her as a strong, educated woman; trained pianist, expert horsewoman, and farm manager that in her husbands military absence could run a household, lease property, collect rents, and consolidate land titles. In the first year of the war it is estimated she traveled 4,000 miles to accompany her husband.

The other view is that she was a woman of whims not to be trusted with property because she was too stupid to know whether or not she owned slaves.

Amen and amen. That’s why Lincoln is now under assault. People have examined his true record and it is offensive to the new PC warriors. The fact that he set them free is irrelevant to them now because he had an impure thought about race relations.

You may have the two views. Nobody else I know of has stated anything like that

If that is not a rhetorical question I will attempt to answer.

I was not the first to use the word “whim.”

I commented only after a good friend placed it into play.

“An answer would no doubt prove...interesting.”

I understand all too well that Democrats have successfully played the race card against Republicans and that D’Souza wants to play it right back. And he has come up with a narrative that he thinks will prompt certain groups, that today don't often vote Republican, to flock to the polls to vote Republican.

Just be careful playing the race card - unless you are prepared to tear down the monuments to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and George Mason. And General Grant. And President Lincoln. And Moses.

By calling Lincoln a white supremacist then are you not playing the race card yourself?

I was illustrating the point that playing the race card can turn around and bite the person playing it.

D’Souza’s “100 percent pure” fig leaf does not cover up as much as he thinks it does.

“When did JFK visit Dr. King in jail ?

Uhhh, allow me to recuse myself and correct the record - in a way.
JFK didn’t actually go down to Georgia and step inside the Dekalb County jail.
HIs physical corporeal self didn’t go that far, but he was there in spirit and that is enough for liberals, right ?

JFK called Ernest Vandiver the governor of Georgia asking for his release; saying “it would be of tremendous benefit to me.” Vandiver couldn’t promise anything but wanted to help JFK and worked in secrecy to get MLK Jr. released.

Meanwhile, Sergeant Shriver, brother in law of JFK, persuaded JFK to make a call to Coretta King to express his sympathy and support. JFK’s call with Coretta King lasted less than 90 seconds. Of course, that call was leaked to the press.

Robert Kennedy was furious when he found out and thought that this would cost his brother the election.

With word out that JFK had called Coretta King and with Governor Vandiver working in the background, Martin Luther King Jr. was released the next day, and he publicly thanked John F. Kennedy for making his release possible. MLK Jr. had been confined in jail for 30 hours.

King also made it a point to say that he had not heard from Vice President Nixon or any other republican for that matter. King had had a closer bond with Nixon, and Nixon had often called MLK for advice; but on this matter he felt that Nixon was a “moral coward.” Nixon had told Jackie Robinson, the baseball star, that calling MLK Jr. would be “grandstanding.”

Theodore White in his book,The Making of the President 1960, said that Negro political leaders claimed that the Black vote helped carry 11 states with 169 electoral votes for Kennedy. Kennedy got 70% of the Black vote nationwide compared to Adlai Stevenson’s 60% in 1956.

As always in liberal land, it is the thought that counts which was as good as unlocking the jail door cell personally.

I found it interesting that the democrats were already getting 60% of the Black vote in 1956. JFK’s role in getting Martin Luther King, Jr. released did change history.

“I’ll leave you to nurse your bites then.”

Your best rejoinder in awhile.

You should host the next White House Correspondence Dinner.
