Former ambassador to Vietnam: Trump wanted me to send back refugees
San Jose Mercury ^ | April 6, 2018 | Tatiana Sanchez

Former U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius said he resigned from his post last year after the Trump administration asked him to pressure the Vietnamese government to receive more than 8,000 Vietnamese refugees marked in the U.S. for deportation.

The vast majority of the people targeted for deportation — sometimes for minor crimes — were war refugees who had established lives in the U.S. after fleeing the Vietnam War more than 40 years ago, Osius wrote in an essay this month for the American Foreign Service Association.

Minor crimes? In whose judgement? The Vietnam War ended 40 years ago how come these individuals are considered war refugees? They aren't refugees after all but illegal aliens who committed crimes while residing in our country.

Osius was appointed to his ambassadorship by Barack Obama.
Nuff said.

Correct.

And we still don’t have a much-needed ‘like’ button on FR :(

If they came as refugees from Vietnam decades ago, they would be citizens now, if they simply FOLLOWED THE PROCESS, as Vietnam has, or at least had, a huge exemption from standard immigration laws.

If they didn’t take advantage of that, then they were up to something else, or already broke our laws, so it’s hard to see a downside of Trump’s policy.

IOW, they're in the 40s, at minimum, and haven't been able to live within the law? Out! Out! Out! Thanks artichokegrower.

“were war refugees who had established lives in the U.S. after fleeing the Vietnam War”

The guy is a liar.
Most from that era are all citizens by now.

There are still many new people coming here from Vietnam. To deliberately confuse the two groups is disgusting.

Why would a "war refugee" who has been in this country for 40 years not have already taken the necessary measures to become a U.S. citizen?

As far as I know, the United States does not deport its own citizens. That being the case, the people affected by the direction from the Trump administration would necessarily be non-citizens, which makes them eligible for deportation if/when they beak our laws. Also, since Vietnam is no longer considered an enemy, the status of "refugee" no longer applies to Vietnamese citizens residing in this country, right?

Why do you feel compelled to insult decent people who work for a living and are self-supporting business men & women as well as taxpayers? And, by the way, most are MAGA supporters.

The ones that are slated for deportation are on the list because of their criminal activity.

Post 2 nails it.

WTF was a gay guy, doing as the American ambassador to Vietnam?

Vietnam is NOT the most gay-friendly place in the world.

Now I really like Vietnam. It is unlike any other place I have ever been. It is a very unique place.

(if you are on the right wavelength)

Vietnam is a lot different than I had expected, it is friendly to Americans, it has a completely non-racist population, it is interesting, and I like it there quite a bit.

But it is not a gay-oriented place.

At all.

You can’t believe anything people say Trump said unless they have a direct, in context, and objective quote from Trump himself.

It comes months after Vietnamese activists across the country, including many in the Bay Area, raised concerns that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was rounding up undocumented immigrants from Vietnam in unprecedented numbers that left communities shocked and fearful.

Run on sentence much?

I won’t second guess Donald Trump and try to say what he should do. I have learned that only Trump knows what he should do but I do hope this one does not happen or is limited to felons. I know a man who was a real refugee. He came out on one of the boats and spent time in a camp in the Phillipines as a child. He is a hard worker and a valued employee at the shipyard here and is one of the higher paid men.I have tried to help him get his citizenship twice and he almost gets there but then gets in a bar fight and goes to jail for thirty days. I would hate to see him get sent back.
