U.S. and Turkish foreign ministers meet at NATO summit

Newly appointed U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu met on the sidelines of NATO foreign ministers summit in Brussels on Friday.

The U.S. Department of State said Pompeo and Çavuşoğlu discussed the situation in Syria and a range of bilateral issues, including U.S. citizens detained in Turkey.

“The secretary and foreign minister agreed on the value of U.S.-Turkish partnership in the region and of maintaining close communication. Secretary Pompeo conveyed the administration’s concern for U.S, citizens and mission Turkey local staff detained in Turkey. Building upon prior discussions on Manbij, the two reaffirmed their support for the established bilateral process to find a common way forward. They also discussed the United States’ commitment to supporting Turkey’s national security concerns,” a State Department statement said.

..

Çavuşoğlu also said Turkey’s purchase of Russian S-400 air defence systems was among the topics discussed during the meeting. “We have taken the first steps and there is no return, but there may be different steps taken in the future," Çavuşoğlu said, adding that Turkey could evaluate ‘good offers” for U.S.-made Patriot missiles or other air defence systems.

Çavuşoğlu said that the roadmap for Syria's Manbij region developed by the joint working groups established under the former Secretary of State Tillerson was approved during the meeting, Hürriyet Daily News reported.

“We will implement the Manbij model in other parts of Syria, particularly east of the Euphrates. We’ll therefore be taking a step with the U.S. on an issue that causes tension in our bilateral ties. If the roadmap is implemented, the [Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units] YPG will be withdrawn from Manbij. Otherwise we’ll have to intervene against the terrorists just like we did in Afrin,” Çavuşoğlu told to the press in Brussels.

Turkey hears what they want to hear. Then lies about what was said.

There was NO plan for Manbij approved by SOS Tillerson, nor by the State Department. There was no Agreement, but Turkey later called it an "understanding". (tactical lie) "Taqiyya".

That game will fail, dealing with SOS Pompeo and President Trump.

I hear Mueller will be issuing a subpoena to Pompeo asking him what was going through his mind at the time he held these talks and whether he was thinking about having Russian dressing on his salad.

“Turkey hears what they want to hear. Then lies about what was said.”

Excellent summary of the press release.

Despite what they report, real communication likely went on behind the scenes. I see this as part of a flurry of high-level coordination (France, UK, Germany, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Jordan) that has been going on over the last week or two by Pompeo and President Trump. Quite exceptional.

I think they are formally notifying/briefing/coordinating about upcoming actions against Iran, probably including their forces in Syria.

During last week’s trip to the Mid East, Pompeo said Trump had “a comprehensive Iran plan that is designed to counter the full array of threats emanating from Tehran.”

“We are urging nations around the world to sanction any individuals and entities associated with Iran’s missile program, and it has also been a big part of discussions with Europeans,” Brian Hook, a senior policy adviser traveling with Pompeo, said on April 28 in Saudi Arabia.

Turkey is strait-up annexing northern Syria. Up to this point, the Euphrates has been a defacto red-line for the Kurds, so giving up land to the east is going to be a tough sell. West of the Euphrates might be a lost cause. Turkey will do anything to prevent establishment of a Kurdish state, even if they eventually have to annex all of Rojava.

“Turkey is strait-up annexing northern Syria.”

Displacing the local population in Afrin and importing Sunni jihadis stacks the decks demographically for any future referendum to unite with Turkey.

The nearby Turkish port of Iskenderun was historically part of Syria, until Turkey engineered a stacked referendum in 1939.

Not going to happen. For many reason. Not the least of it, the Kurds.

Yes, and the Turkish Lira is at it’s lowest point to the dollar.

Something like 4.25 to 1 dollar.

There will be other pressure since that will make their debt service more difficult.

They have killed their tourist trade with all the Jihadi crap and when the financial side of that hits the public in the pocket with the elections approaching?

smile.
