'Great power competition': Nato announces Atlantic command to counter Russia

Amid rising tensions with Russia, the Pentagon has announced the official launch of a new naval command and the reactivation of the US Second Fleet to bolster the US and Nato presence in the Atlantic Ocean.

“The return to great power competition and a resurgent Russia demands that Nato refocus on the Atlantic to ensure dedicated reinforcement of the continent and demonstrate a capable and credible deterrence effect,” said Johnny Michael, a Pentagon spokesman. He said the new Nato command “will be the linchpin of trans-Atlantic security”.

The decision reflects escalating worries across Europe and within Nato over Russia’s increased military presence and patrols in the Atlantic region. Under the new plan, the US will set up Nato’s new Atlantic Command headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia.

... Nato also created a new logistics command, which is expected to be located in Germany.

Somebody posted a photo meme. The first photo was the defense ministers of Germany, Sweden, Denmark and Norway. All young, attractive women. They look like fashion models. Below was the photo of a serious, dangerous looking older man. It was labeled “The Russian Defense Minister.”

In thirty plus years, I have run across a handful of young, attractive women who were also extremely competent in their job. There were other women who were competent, forceful, good employees, but they were not fashion plates. I could accept that one of those women defense ministers was worth her weight and also that good looking. But all of them? It makes me wonder if Europe is serious about defense.

The US is re-activating the Second Fleet. Which is interesting.

If we spend so much more on the military than Russia how come some are always talking about how much of a danger Putin is? Maybe an easing of tensions and an effort to work the Russians on easing Middle East problems are in order.

Putin consolidates his power by threatening the West (and poisoning people and throwing them out of windows).

It makes me wonder if Europe is serious about defense.

Some of their planes and ships are good on paper, but their land forces pretty much suck - the much vaulted German Leopard II turned out to be a dud in use.

“It makes me wonder if Europe is serious about defense.”

Yeh, a good way to demonstrate their seriousness would be to start paying their fair share of 2% GDP as they agreed to.....

May 19, 2017 - For the second year in a row, a US armored brigade competed in the Strong Europe Tank Challenge against a range of European partners — and lost. Austria, which didn't participate last year, took gold, while Germany came in second.

Here's the Austrian Leopard 2A4 tank that ended up taking gold.

"Happy" doesn't mean squat on a battlefield...something most euroweenies today wouldn't know about.

Deep.

Except for that whole happy to survive the battlefield thing.

Btw I am an American living in Europe and I detect a slight smile in the photo you posted so thanks for adding.
