Trump White House accuses China of 'Orwellian nonsense'

Beijing seeks to change US airline references to disputed territories

Harsh statement released as US trade delegation returns

The White House on Saturday condemned Chinese efforts to control how US airlines refer to Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao as “Orwellian nonsense”. The harshly worded statement came as a high-level trade delegation led by the Treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin returned from negotiations in China.

The carriers were told to remove references on their websites or in other material that suggests Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau are part of countries independent from China, US and airline officials said.

Taiwan is China’s most sensitive territorial issue. Beijing considers the self-ruled, democratic island a wayward province. Hong Kong and Macau are former European colonies that are now part of China but run largely autonomously.

A spokesman for Airlines for America, a trade group representing United Airlines, American Airlines and other major carriers, said the group was “continuing to work with US government officials as we determine next steps”.

In January, Delta Air Lines, following a demand from China over listing Taiwan and Tibet as countries on its website, apologized for making “an inadvertent error with no business or political intention” and said it had taken steps to resolve the issue.

In trade talks this week, the Trump administration demanded a $200bn cut in China’s trade surplus with the US by 2020, sharply lower tariffs and a halt to subsidies for advanced technology, people familiar with the talks said on Friday.

Trump tweeted on Friday that he would meet with US trade officials once they returned. “It is hard for China in that they have become very spoiled with US trade wins!” Trump wrote.

The spat over airline destination labels symbolizes the larger issue of serious trade friction. Trump is hitting China's sore spots. It will get worse for China if it refuses to budge.

As an American of Chinese descent, Do you understand the amount of social and civil unrest the ChiComs would face if we stopped buying products from China, even for a short period of three months?

The people who make our products in China are virtual indentured servants in huge factories, working six days a week churning out the junk that we buy. I know this as a fact, as I have worked for an American company in China.

They cannot afford to be idled industrially for any length of time. Their economy would collapse. They are also the biggest importer of American soybeans. Sure, they can go to other markets for a short period of time, but the vacuum they create buy buying from other countries, will be filled with American soybeans.

When China recognizes territorial waters around the Spratleys to be international in scope, we may be willing to take this matter up with Taiwan, Macau, and Hong Kong.

My wife is originally from Xiamen and remembers Xi as the mayor there. From what I’ve seen there - at least in Fujian - is that you are 100% correct.

If factories go idle, the whole house of cards comes down very quickly.

The wujing would be powerless to stop it.

They are hoping their bluffing would work out. If not, Xi's hold on power would rapidly deteriorate.

Taiwan is China.

The mainland is Red China.

Let China know through diplomatic channels that until they back down, the US will be searching every last inch of the South China Sea for the wreckage of MH370 -- and that if they attempt to interfere, the reason for the naval presence will be released to the world. Thanks TigerLikesRooster.

If the US stopped buying their stuff tomorrow, where would China be? Where would we be? I think they have a lot more to lose than we do in this relationship.

On-shoring may take time and some of it may not be done, but South East Asian countries can take up the slack when Chinese factories will go idle. The fallout to U.S. economy would be short-term. Those who make their living by selling their stuffs to China could be in some trouble, but overall U.S. can handle it.

China and Taiwan should not be referred to as separate countries. The mainland should be referred to as occupied provinces of the Republic of China.
