IIRC, the Navy’s Fleets are geographical commands. They “own” a chunk of ocean, and any ships operating in that chunk, are under their command.

Second Fleet- “owned” the North Atlantic
Fifth Fleet- Indian Ocean
Sixth Fleet- Mediterranean
Seventh Fleet- Western Pacific

So, never heard of a “first” fleet. Where would it be?

Same thoughts here - agreeing with you - it’s not a Pacific fleet activation

The First Fleet was a unit of the United States Navy, in operation from as early as 1946 (but definitely active by 1948 as the First Task Fleet) to 1 February 1973 in the western Pacific Ocean as part of the Pacific Fleet. In 1973, it was disestablished and its duties assumed by the Third Fleet.

Were you a specialist in enemy AAA systems?

(don’t know if I read you correctly but ZSU 23mm is Russian-built, no?)

It is. Basically an F-5 guidance system.

My specialty was TS on the 43 but not TS on the SA-6,7,8 determent platforms guarding protected areas.

The 23-4 was a stand-alone unit to counterfeit as a tank.

Yeah, sounds like what I’ve seen. Is that 23mm considered cannon? I guess it would be in a MiG.

Watching the VN stories of the MiG’s against the F-4’s and I think, IIRC, the MiG-19 had 3 30mm cannon.

Still, 23mm.....that could wreck your day....

in case that didn’t come out right

In the 70’s, 2nd Fleet always did the nutty ports-of-call for the State Department. Leningrad was pretty cool, though.

They’ve created a bureaucracy now all they need is some ships and planes.

Would prefer the use of geographic names. What is wrong with the North Atlantic Fleet?
