“Even more than that though, I’d like for it to happen and no one ever hears of it. “Shoot, shovel, and shut up.””

They used to hang horse thieves from the nearest tree. Going back further, they used to let their bodies rot on those trees, until the flesh on the carcasses had been picked clean by critters - as a warning to all but the most motivated bad guys. Now we provide three hots and a cot to the most depraved murderers, and call it progress. Gotta wonder, sometimes.

The down side of that approach is “what if you hang the wrong horse thief, or it was all a misunderstanding, or he could have reformed?” The up side is when you catch someone on your horse, or in your home, the chances that it’s the wrong thief or a misunderstanding are minuscule. As for the chance of reform, thieves have that chance before each crime. Once they cross the threshold, they deserve a chance to discuss their sins with God . . . face-to-face.

Note: I’m not a whole lot more sympathetic to invaders who enter our country illegally. Once they cross that border, they deserve no sympathy. Deport them all, and if they get shot resisting arrest, it serves them right for being here illegally to begin with.
