US tells German businesses to stop trade in Iran 'immediately'

German businesses should immediately halt their operations in Iran following President Donald Trump's decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal, the US ambassador to Germany said on Tuesday.

"German companies doing business in Iran should wind down operations immediately," tweeted newly-appointed Richard Grenell.

Germany is one of Iran's largest trading partners, with German exports hitting some €2.6 billion in 2016, up 26 percent on the previous year, according to the Ministry of Finance in Berlin.

They can sell in Iran or sell in the US, but not both. And if they want to travel to the US, they had better not sell in Iran.

Virtually every single EU member was making money off this deal (not just the Germans).

Both Boeing and Airbus are set to lose a 40-billion dollar deal here. Iran state airlines are in dismal shape and were counting on a new asset situation to reset their travel industry.

Mercedes signed a massive deal with an Iranian company to produce trucks in the fall of last year.

The thing about this...there were tons of jobs and better economic conditions coming to regular working-class Iranians. While peeved at Trump....they also have to be peeved at the Mullahs and the way this whole thing has screwed them over.

Put down the deal and step away from Iran.

Probably better to view as "delay" than "lose." Once the Iran military projection (nuke) and terrorist support ends, business will be booming in Iran.

This is what it’s all about. This has always been what it’s all about. The Germans in particular have a very mercenary interest in selling stuff to Iran. I remember as an exchange student in Germany having this discussion with my professor. I said Germany’s interest here was purely profit. He, being an old 60s hippie, claimed doing business with Iran would moderate their behavior and make them less aggressive. I remember that conversation like it was yesterday.

I graduated from college in 1994......

Hours Into His New Job, Trump’s Ambassador To Germany Offends His Hosts

“It’s not my task to teach people about the fine art of diplomacy, especially not the U.S. ambassador. But he does appear to need some tutoring,” said Andrea Nahles, the leader of Germany’s mainstream Social Democratic party, striking a sarcastic tone. The Social Democrats are part of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government and are in charge of key responsibilities, including the Foreign Ministry.

For the Europeans, this wasn't a nuclear deal, it was a trade deal.

The Pakistani nuke program, Saddam Hussein's WMD programs, tech transfer to the Soviet Union: wherever you look, our European "allies" are selling us out and transferring weapons technology or dual use technology.

And the Germans are the worst of the lot.

The Germans have this amazing ability to spout off about the highest internationalist ideals and combine it with the most mercenary self-interest while having absolutely no awareness of the hypocrisy involved.

The combination of bullying self-righteousness and naked self-interest is one of the reasons they are so "loved" by their neighbors.

Here’s a lesson in diplomacy for Germany:

If you are dependent on another country for your national security, you don’t get to dictate diplomacy to your benefactor!
