US President Donald Trumps pullout from the Iran nuclear deal has put Europe under pressure to salvage the 2015 multilateral agreement. But does the EU have what it takes to stand up to US sanctions?
The day after Trump announced his long-dreaded decision to withdraw from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, EU members were hammering out measures to try to protect European firms doing business in Iran from US sanctions.
The JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) as the Iran deal is formally known was signed between Iran, the US, Russia, China, Britain, France, Germany and the EU.
But Trumps pullout has left international companies doing business in Iran vulnerable to the extraterritoriality of US law, which enables Washington to punish foreign companies operating in Iran if they have business dealings with the US or use dollar transactions.
Europe has long complained about the long arm of US economic jurisdictions, which made it difficult for major European banks and companies to operate in Iran even before the US pullout. Amid uncertainty over Trumps impending decision, European banks have avoided Iran-related transactions, fearing the American guillotine that has severely punished firms evading US sanctions in the past, such as a hefty, almost $9 billion fine slapped on Frances largest bank, BNP Paribas, in 2014 for sanctions evasion.
On Wednesday, those gripes reached a pitch. Slamming the US withdrawal from the Iran deal as an error, French Finance Minister Bruno Le Marie complained that it was not acceptable for the US to play economic policeman of the planet.

No, dear. We only wish to control what type of people we do business with.
If you do business with Iran, we won't do business with you.
You are free to choose your own course, as you see fit.
You can do what you want, EU, but the next time you see us coming you better run.
We’re the 900 pound gorilla.
What divisions does Europe have?
The EU is selling Iran the equipment to make the bombs. No wonder they’re pissed.
Iran promised to kill them last.

Except - IT WASN’T SIGNED!
Rush just said Iran never signed it.
State Department says Iran NEVER SIGNED nuclear deal and its not legally binding as it tells Congress to butt out of Obamas political commitments

So?
Iran never signed it. There was no deal.
“Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action”
Another perfect example of insipid bureaucratese naming. Just like “affirmative action”, “quantitative easing” and so many others - saying absolute nothing, but meant to camouflage something very undesirable.
LIES!

Many in EU didn’t mind us “playing policeman” in WWII, now, did they?
Didn’t mind us financing all the US bases, and NATO, all these years to protect their asses, did they?
Didn’t mind any of the “foreign aid” they received, the rebuilding of their cities, or, paying the lions share of the U.N., the massive trade deficits, (and, “global warming”).
So, shutup Europe. You do business with IRAN, and we no longer do business with you...just don’t involve any US dollars in your dealings with IRAN, and you’re home scott free. Try to grow up for a change and quit looking to the USA to bail you out of everything. Besides, you need to be focusing on how to keep islam from taking over your countries, not whining because you lost the business of one of them.
EU is a failure and they know it. They need the U.S. because their union is pathetic and weak. There will never be a country like the United States of America and it is sad to say Western Europe is slowly dying of its politics and dwindling “native” Europeans.
I don’t hold out much hope for them. Hope I’m wrong!
When are we going to bring our Troops and equipment home from Europe? They don’t deserve our protection and the money they make off of it. Bring them home now and every piece of equipment from M1 Abrams to canteens and mess kits.
"Follow the money!"
Or, to paraphrase,
The Capitalists will sell us the rope with which we will hang them.
― Vladimir Lenin
"The EU will sell the mullahs the technology with which they will Nuke Europe"
Therein lays the value system of the current Europe.
They have totally abandoned the precepts of Christianity and, by extension, all moral values. I attribute this to the United States as we have supported Western Europe since World War II and that allowed them to use their economies to become socialist nations. They seemed to have it all but were actually using other peoples money, ours, to bankroll their laziness and greed.
Europe's values are so low they will deal with anyone to make money, but they have to since they have painted themselves into a financial corner and if the free one month vacations and other free stuff have to be curtailed the rulers know they will end up with a revolt.
“I attribute this to the United States as we have supported Western Europe since World War II “
Me too.
And it’s not just economics.
They have developed a culture, after 3 complete generations of ZERO existential threat, of laziness, greed, and largess. They have no interest in their cultural history (the greatest in the history of man), nor their future.
The welfare family, writ large.
They never even knew their daddy’s name. And don’t care.
