West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, North Carolina primaries offer November clues, warning

Tuesday’s Republican and Democratic primaries in West Virginia, Indiana, Ohio and North Carolina provided some clues about what to expect in the upcoming November midterm elections – including warning signs for Democrats.

In West Virginia, Attorney General Patrick Morrisey emerged as the Republican senatorial nominee in a contentious primary marked by the unusual candidacy of the controversial former coal executive Don Blankenship. Blankenship was convicted and sent to prison for a year for his role in a coal mine explosion that killed 29 workers in 2010.

The surprising popularity of Blankenship in pre-election polling – despite his loss Tuesday – demonstrated the continued appeal of anti-establishment candidates nationwide. Blankenship consistently and harshly attacked his own party's leader in the Senate, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, and very recently used derogatory language that some characterized as racist.

Even President Trump urged voters not to cast ballots for Blankenship, despite the candidate's suggestion that he is “Trumpier than Trump.”

if you were a Democrat candidate and watched Tuesdays results and last night's Trump rally you should be very nervous.

It appears Trump will be campaigning hard for the GOP and his message is a Democrat campaign killer

Trump basically is making the case

2016 wasn’t my election, it was our election.

See all this stuff we are doing you really like, Dem so and so running in Nov voted against it.

See all this stuff you hated and we got rid of, Dem x voted to keep it.

See all this stuff you still want done. Democrat candidate such and such will vote to stop us.

OH got it right. For Governor, Kasick's Lt Gov Mary Taylor ran a mean campaign and claimed to be more Trump than Trump. All Mike DeWine had to say was (1) she hadn't endorsed Trump against hillary and (2)her family benefitted massively from construction contracts from the state. DeWine has a chance against Cordray, who did a real got job in the Dem primary with identifying pocketbook issues which are important in OH. Kucinich, meanwhile, didn't articulate his core issues (world peace and fair trade and wages) at all.

For the US Senate, Renacci should give Sherrod Brown a real competition. Senator Brown hasn't been real strong at articulating his premier issues lately.

OH is tough to judge. Parts of the state are very disconnected from one another. It does seem that voters are pretty well informed about the issues on all levels of gov.

Trump made sure Democrats knew.....EVERY candidate he endorsed WON.

That’s making Dems reach for the valium washed down with tumblers of 150 proof vodka.

I view West Virginia as Alabama redux, with Morrisey in the role of Mo Brooks, Jenkins in the role of Luther Strange (the Establishment RINO candidate), and Blankenship in the role of Roy Moore.

In this case, the candidate in the Brooks role won, instead of the Moore role. Would that Alabama had been as wise — we wouldn’t have Doug Jones today.

I see kind of the same thing shaping up in Arizona. Think of Dr. Kelli Ward as Brooks, Martha McSally as Strange, and Sheriff Joe as Moore.
