Florida’s sunshine, yet again, is only worth a silver medal when it comes to the annual best and worst states to do business in survey published by Chief Executive magazine.
How much of a silver? This is the 14th straight year Florida is the runner-up to Texas in the survey, of some 300 CEOs nationwide. The biggest factor blocking Florida from dethroning Texas won’t come as a surprise to many business leaders: workforce quality. Florida ranked No. 22 in that category, while Texas was No. 4.
The business climate survey, on topics including workforce, taxes and regulation and living environment, had little movement at the top and bottom compared to pervious surveys, beyond Florida’s Texas chase. North Carolina and South Carolina tied for third place, while Indiana ranked No. 5. On the rear of the list, the worst states to do business in, the survey found, are: California at No. 50, followed by New York, Illinois, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts. All those positions, the magazine states, have remained virtually the same for four straight years.
Florida, meanwhile, will not give hope at unseating Texas.
In an article on the survey, the magazine says the “Orlando area is leading the charge with a flourishing advanced manufacturing sector, based on being at the center of a nexus of colleges and universities and tapping the expertise of engineers from the nearby Space Coast around Cape Canaveral on the Atlantic Ocean..."

I think Texas ranks first in the number of high school football players signing scholarships.
On the other hand, Florida is first percentage wise and no other state is close.
I’ll take 2nd best in terms of business climate. That’s still damn good. Anybody notice Florida and Texas manage to consistently be the best and run their state governments WITHOUT a state income tax?
Yes it CAN be done. You don’t have to tax the beejezus out of everyone and load up on a money sucking public sector complete with labor unions that stick their grubby paws ever deeper into the taxpayers’ wallets.
You also don’t need reams of environmental regulations that are expensive for companies to comply with, in order to have a relatively clean environment.
Florida will never catch up without deregulation of its licensing laws
It’s the elderly population that is the issue, I think. As the article states, the quality of the work force is a problem. Most businesses want young workers who will be around.

The “Work Ethic” in Florida is DISMAL...
It’s extremely difficult to find people of ANY CAREER, of ALL AGES, who pay attention, who CARE to do a good job.
People who live here who hire others, have a very short list of quality workers.

And yet, for some inexplicable reason, CA is now the FIFTH LARGEST ECONOMY IN THE WORLD standing alone, and apart from the United States. And as I drove across highway 237, which skirts the south end of San Francisco Bay, a place where I worked up until about 12 years ago, the other day, I was blown away by the construction that is/has taken place along that corridor. I keep wondering when the traffic congestion will start to impact all of this, but it never seems to.
Please, Florida can take the prize. We’re getting far too many imports to TX.

With so many “Florida man” stories in the press for the last twenty years, it may be the workforce here is weird, too.
CA is moving on up. I remember they were only the sixth largest in the world a decade ago.
