'Catastrophic': Denmark reacts to US break with Europe over Iran deal

Leading politicians in Denmark were broadly critical of the announcement on Tuesday by President Donald Trump that the United States would violate the Iran nuclear deal.

In a statement at the White House on Tuesday, Trump said the US would “exit the Iran deal” agreed with other major powers in 2015, and warned that “any nation that helps Iran in its quest for nuclear weapons could be strongly sanctioned”.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal, was agreed in 2015 between Iran, the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany, and the European Union.

Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen tweeted shortly after Trump’s announcement that Denmark “continues to support the Iran deal, contingent on Iran’s strict compliance,” adding the agreement was “important for non-proliferation and regional security.” The PM, who has previously sought to cultivate good relations with Washington, did not mention the United States or Trump directly.

Foreign Minister Anders Samuelsen […] added that Denmark was “not naïve” on Iran. “From a Danish and European point of view, we want to maintain the agreement, provided the IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency, ed.] verifies Iranian compliance. But we are certainly not naïve when it comes to Iran,” he said. …

“Europe” was always like this. The point is to not let them get any more powerful.

Dane-Geld
by Rudyard Kipling

It is always a temptation to an armed and agile nation
To call upon a neighbour and to say: —
“We invaded you last night—we are quite prepared to fight,
Unless you pay us cash to go away.”

And that is called asking for Dane-geld,
And the people who ask it explain
That you’ve only to pay ‘em the Dane-geld
And then you’ll get rid of the Dane!

It is always a temptation for a rich and lazy nation,
To puff and look important and to say: —
“Though we know we should defeat you, we have not the time to meet you.
We will therefore pay you cash to go away.”

And that is called paying the Dane-geld;
But we’ve proved it again and again,
That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld
You never get rid of the Dane.

It is wrong to put temptation in the path of any nation,
For fear they should succumb and go astray;
So when you are requested to pay up or be molested,
You will find it better policy to say: —

“We never pay any-one Dane-geld,
No matter how trifling the cost;
For the end of that game is oppression and shame,
And the nation that pays it is lost!”

“Violated”?

I’m seeing that word all over the reporting of this story, claiming Trump “violated” the deal.

Neither Trump nor, in fact, the U.S. is a party to the deal. This was a deal between Obama and Iran, since he didn’t want to go the treaty route. So for Trump, there is no “deal” to “violate”.

He should push back strongly on that point, and put the world on notice that US presidents who try to make deals on behalf of the US in isolation - without going the treaty route - are only acting on their own behalf, not on behalf of the country, period.

The night before Operation Overlord, Gen Eisenhower was supposedly watching a movie Richard III with his senior staff and Eisenhower was reported to have said “what is it with these Europeans and their ineptitude to solve their own problems?”

Never mind the phrase “executive agreement” not having any legal definition in the US that I’m aware of.

Yes; “violated” is the current manifestation of the Big Lie in the media.

The US is not violating the terms of the agreement. The US is withdrawing from the agreement.

It looks like you’ll have to forego the mullah’s blood money Yurps. Too bad.
