They do that all the time, I was stationed at King Salmon in 1979 and they will fly just inside the ADIZ and we would scramble they are just checking scramble time. We also fly KC135 out of Fairbanks and do the same thing to them. I have actually seen Russian chasing the KC135 back across the ADIZ on radar. Cat and mouse games. Lot of those radar sites are civilian manned now and the signal is sent to Cheyenne Mountain.
I was stationed in Cold Bay 1975/76 in radar ops, and I saw the same thing, too.
I still remember one of your King Salmon jet jockeys bubble checking us in an F4. Scared the crap out of everyone who didn't know what was happening.

Cold Bay, that was a lonely assignment....LOL We at least had females at our site...We used the old Sadie system back then and it was old. I was part of the frozen chosen, scope dope till the end

This has been going on for about 70 years by both sides. It is apparently good training for both sides. The “bears” probe and our armed fighters intercept the “enemy”. I have seen many pictures of the crews of both planes friendly waving at each other. Of course these events could turn deadly, but the Bears would quickly become extinct.
Oh but so did we. Cold Bay was picked in 1976 to be the first remote Alaskan radar site where they began sending females. My first six months there was before this happened, and the last six was after. I could have written a PhD thesis on psychology just observing the changes in male behavior before and after the change. And oh do I have stories....
