Elon Musk's fame used to be a huge advantage for Tesla — but now it's becoming a problem

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is a rare thing in the car business: a celebrity and a leader.

His celebrity has definitely helped fuel Tesla's rise.

But of late it has begun to reveal some disadvantages.

Maybe you haven't been paying attention to all things Tesla for the past two weeks. Here's an update:

Tesla reported first-quarter earnings and lost over $700 million in three months.

CEO Elon Musk, who is supposed to be sleeping on the floor of his factory in California, flipped out on an earnings call, silencing two analysts and taking 20 minutes of questions from a YouTuber who owns less than 100 shares of Tesla stock and pitched his insights to Musk via Twitter.

The stock tanked.

Musk got on Twitter to attack the offending analysts as instruments of short-sellers; neither has a drastically bearish view of the stock, and both have hold ratings.

The stock bounced back.

Musk warned short sellers that they were in for a world of hurt.

Didn’t Musk recently turn on Trump. Quit his economic council?

The media has pimped musk for so long it is just now starting to dawn on people that he is a huckster. Musk never puts any of his own money behind his new schemes that he announces every month. Almost all of his ideas are funded thru govt grants, loans and the like. In other words the TAXPAYERS are funding this ego maniac.

Also notice that this dirtbag NEVER finishes one project to completion. His strategy is to start working on new projects to cover up that he never finishes anything as promised.

Fortunately some press articles are starting to see the light with this crook. It is only a matter of time before his house of cards falls apart.

I have a friend who interviewed with him to head quality control. She said the cult of personality around him was creepy. He yelled and cursed and generally acted the ass.

It was more fun when Obama helped bankroll his vanity projects.

Musk is one of those rare individuals who should be locked away in an “ideas room” and not be allowed to head up the day to day management of a corporation.

Like Facebook’s Zuckerberg, neither have any management skills, leadership ability or apparently, training.
They seem to me to be great on ideas, but have no clue on how to manage a large corporation.
Crap, manufacturing automobiles is not a new process; Tesla has never and likely will never meet production goals for their vehicles.

I’ve worked in construction management on Yuge mining projects and have worked with brilliant engineers who couldn’t lead a person out of a burning building.

Get Musk out of corporate management and let him be the innovator that he apparently is.

All good points. I used to compare him to P.T. Barnum; but, I have stopped doing that because at least Barnum gave the customer some entertainment for their money.

Didn’t Musk recently turn on Trump. Quit his economic council?

Its kind of hard to tell where Musk is regarding President Trump. Just after the election there was a bunch of politicians and business people who gathered on an island to meet about getting him impeached before he was even inaugurated. Musk was at that meeting if I remember correctly. But then he was on Trump's business council. Then he left the council for some cheap virtue signaling points. But he did praise Trump recently about trade and especially tariffs with China, (which helps his Tesla business).

Musk has always been more pragmatic than ideological about business and trade, and is certainly willing to structure his business models around tax breaks. This seems to be where he is at now, not actively opposing Trump, just trying to help his own businesses. His latest deal with the government is accepting 20 years of tax breaks from Los Angeles in order to build the BFR rocket in Los Angeles.

You should read his biography that includes the positives and negatives. You would learn a lot based on your posts here.

You should watch the Youtube video of the Falcon Heavy demo launch. That’s very entertaining if you’re a tech or space fan.

Trump gave Musk and SpaceX a nice congratulatory Tweet after the Falcon Heavy launch:

Congratulations @ElonMusk and @SpaceX on the successful #FalconHeavy launch. This achievement, along with @NASA’s commercial and international partners, continues to show American ingenuity at its best!
