Indonesia’s police chief, Tito Karnavian, said the bombings had been the work of one family, who set off three different kinds of bombs.

Mr. Mangera said the bombs had been detonated in different parts of the city within minutes of one another. He said the victims included many worshipers who were entering and leaving the churches between services. Two police officers were among the victims, he said.
At a news conference on Sunday, the police chief identified one attacker as Dita and the woman as Puji Kuswanti. He said two sons, Yusuf, 18, and Alif, 16, were also involved. Two younger children were also seen in the company of the woman at one bombing site, the police said.
The police said the father, driving a Toyota minivan, had dropped off the mother and the two younger children, ages 12 and 9, at the Indonesia Christian Church.
Kumparan News, an online news site, quoted the deputy police chief of Surabaya as saying that a woman with two children tried to force her way into the church after being stopped by a security guard. The woman then detonated the bomb in the yard outside the entrance, killing herself and the two children, the deputy police chief said.

There’s often an ethnic as well as a religious dimension to these sorts of things in Indonesia. The ethnic Chinese minority often are Christian.

How evil does one have to be to strap bombs to one’s own children so they can go out to murder others who have done NOTHING to you. Indonesia is a majority mudslime country, I highly doubt they were “oppressed”. I hope they all rot in Hell.
Why I call them subhuman savages. Spoken to their child: “OK, Abdul, we’re going out for a walk now to blow up Christians. It won’t hurt at all, and then we go to Paradise.”

Pretty damn evil. In no way do I defend what that woman did, but, based on the account we can’t be sure what her plan really was. It sounded to me like she was using the children to get past security, and that didn’t work, at which point she blew up herself (and her children). Maybe there was a tiny shred of maternal feeling in her, and she planned to separate from the kids if they got inside the church. If so, the kids would have survived witnessing their mother kill herself, but they would have survived. Or maybe she really believes in instant paradise for martyrs and wanted to share that with her children. My point, I guess is that saying something is just plain evil doesn’t really explain anything, but trying to reconstruct how something could have made sense from the perpetrator’s point of view may sometimes open the way to an explanation (which is quite different from the deed being justified). On the third hand, some things happen for which there is no explanation.
