Liberal ideas move from fringe to front-burner for Democrats

From legal pot to guaranteed jobs, progressive ideas are drawing more attention from Democratic lawmakers — especially potential 2020 contenders.

Freed from the constraints of power, Democrats are becoming a progressive ideas factory.

On issues like health care, immigration, jobs, and crime, once-fringe policy proposals are gaining traction with lawmakers, activists, and wonks as they debate the party’s path out of its current wilderness.

HEALTH CARE

This is the biggest shift. Top-tier Democratic candidates around the country, including some in conservative-leaning districts, are running on a promise of universal access to Medicare.

JOBS

The hottest new topic in progressive circles is a proposal, backed by several of the Senate’s big names, to enlist the federal government to guarantee jobs for the jobless.

BASIC INCOME

While not in direct opposition to the jobs guarantee, some critics favor an alternative proposal: Spending big money to subsidize wages at workers’ existing jobs through the tax code.

IMMIGRATION

Democrats evolved on immigration enforcement under President Obama, from emphasizing enforcement — he was once dubbed “deporter-in-chief” by activists — to taking actions like DACA to protect huge swaths of undocumented immigrants from removal.

MARIJUANA

It was an image that would have seemed unthinkable a few years ago: Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. signing a bong in an appearance on VICE News.

This is awesome. The more they pander to their core, the more sane people leave the party.

“Freed from the constraints of power, Democrats are becoming a progressive ideas factory.”

Now that right there is funny!

They have no original ideas...they want Full Frontal Communism and will settle for nothing less.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That by itself needs a barf alert.
The feeble enforcement of the Bush Administration was reduced further and border turnarounds counted as deportations so it looked like they were still enforcing the laws.
Then the Kenyanesian Usurper just started making them up on his own.
This is why it is almost impossible to not get re-elected for a second term. The party out of power goes nuts and alienates all but their base, and ends up running a placeholder candidate like Mondale, Dole, Kerry, McCain, etc. Then when the masses are tired of the party in power after 8 years, it’s a different story. I think we’re ok for 2020, but in 2024, Katie bar the door.
People tire of establishment crooked do nothing pols. When we have progress, like Reagan and now, 8 years is not enough - which is why Bush 41 cakewalked to election but then squandered it. Pence won't squander it so we have 16 years ahead at least. Frankly, the Dem party on a national level could be dead.
true enough for conventional politicians, but eight years of stunning successes under outsider Trump, with the left and their fakes stream media propaganda arm becoming increasingly irrational during the entire 8 years, the typical pattern has a better chance to be broken than normal ...
This is the biggest joke!
My wife has worked OT every week the past 4 weeks because they have open positions and can’t fill them. I retired a while back and 3 months later my company called and begged me to come back because they can’t get people to work. The vast majority of unemployed now are unemployed for a reason. They have no qualifications whatsoever or no desire to work whatsoever!
“You and I are told increasingly that we have to choose between a left or right, but I would like to suggest that there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down—up to a man’s age-old dream, the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order—or down to the ant heap totalitarianism, and regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course.”
- Ronald Reagan, 1964
This is similar to many people I’ve worked with that go around “raising issues” and pointing out problems—but they never have a solution or actually do anything.
Wish I could agree with you there, but demographics are not our friend.
Millenials eat-up this Progressive garbage with a spoon. And every day a few more of us go on to that big Tea Party in the Sky.
