Skip to comments.White Privilege in a White Coat: How Racism Shaped my Medical Education
Posted on 05/14/2018 11:15:26 AM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer
In this essay, I reflect on some of the ways racial privilege influenced my experience as a white physician in training. While white Americans often think of racism as a social construct primarily affecting people of color, racism is a system of both racial disadvantage as well as reciprocal racial advantage.
Medical professionals are increasingly aware of how social determinants of health lead to important health disparities, however white physicians seldom ask how their own racial privilege reinforces a white supremacist culture and what effects this may have on our patients health.
Drawing attention to the powerful legacy of racial discrimination in medical institutions, I call on other white physicians to name their privilege in order to dismantle the systems that propagate racism in our profession.
Although systems of racial oppression take generations to dismantle, we must begin with an awareness of the problem. As I reflect on that bullet-riddled body and the callousness with which my colleagues mocked the memory of his life, I think of the important work we have left to do.
White physicians have an opportunity to acknowledge the unearned racial privilege that benefited their careers and actively work to dismantle the systems that propagate racism in medicine. I challenge other white physicians to speak out against the racism we have all benefited from and to work towards racial justice in our medical system for our colleagues and our patients.

Max Romano, MD, MPH is from St. Louis, MO, and lived in California, Germany, and Washington, DC before moving to Baltimore, MD in 2010. He earned his bachelors degree in human biology with honors from Stanford University and both his doctorate in medicine and master of public health degrees from Johns Hopkins University. He lives with his spouse, two daughters, and precocious dog in Baltimore, MD.
SJWs are really insane nutburgers.
Progressivism, A.K.A. Marxism, really warps the minds of its adherents.
If you trash Whites, you get an A. If you’re White, you get A+. The idea is to beat Whites into submission, so they beg forgiveness, and don’t complain when the left takes all their money.
What a disgusting pansy!
I would never want this man as my doctor.
He lives with his spouse, two daughters, and precocious dog in Baltimore, MD
WTF does this self loather allow himself to reproduce? He should simply adopt black children abandoned by their progenitors. That would further his efforts to VIRTUE-SIGNAL!
Note to self: Stay the —— away from Max Romano, MD at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center in Baltimore. He is an imbecile.
Medical institutions are motivated to experience the fewest litigation events possible. Hiring and promoting doctors and med staff by identity and not for skill is a sure way to get nailed by lawyers and state certification agencies.
Almost all my doctors are Indian-American, some immigrants, some children of immigrants. I only have one doctor that I seen regularly who is a white, native born male.
I’ve really come to the conclusion, especially after listening to African-American conservatives, that the left really does just want to keep minorities down. I truly think they feel that they don’t have the ability to do advance themselves without help from government.
I think they are the true racists.
“He lives with his spouse, two daughters”
Think globally, act locally. He should abandon his career to make room for someone less “privileged”, and make sure to deny his children any “privilege” as they enter adulthood.
What gender is his spouse?
I can think of at least one white doctor who’s not going to be getting any business from me.
Did he just assume my genetic heritage based on the color of my skin??? He just oppressed my Apache side of my DNA!!!!! What a racist!!!!!
Max has crazy eyes
I don’t allow white people to lecture me on race.
Given the political realities of Baltimore, I doubt a doctor who didn't spout the PC doctrine about white privilege would continue to have a job.
