Swedes lead Bethune Cookman to 'minority' golf title

"The Bethune Cookman Men were led by medalist Marcus Sundlof, of Sweden (65-70-71 206), who bested his teammate Christian Hovstadius for the honor by seven strokes."

So reads one of the more revealing sentences in a PGA website article on the soi-disant "PGA Minority Collegiate Championship," which was staged this past weekend in Florida.

Forgive my French here, but the championship has a distinctly European flavor. Christian Hovstadius is a Swede as well. The Winning Bethune-Cookman team boasts two Swedes, two Irishmen, an Englishman, a Canadian, a white guy from Venezuela, and an all-white coaching staff.

The top four finishers in the tournament included the two Swedes, an Irishman, and a Canadian – all white, all from Bethune Cookman. To be fair, an African-American from Bethune Cookman did come in not far behind the top four finishers.

Hmmmm. So Mr. Cashill, is it entirely possible that the Swedes self identified as AAs? Or were the required to sign off to such? SMDH? PC runamuck yet again.

There were no French listed, so why ask to be excused?

I think it's because Bethune-Cookman is a historically black college. Although most of the students are black, this doesn't mean Bethune-Cookman bans white people from attending.

If you want to win at basketball, you will probably end up recruiting some black people to your college. If you want to win the golf championship, you will probably end up recruiting some white people. I don't see the problem here (other than the racism of having a "blacks only" golf competition in the first place).

That IS precisely the problem, and the source of the rich irony of the story.

Isn’t this the start of a joke: “ two Swedes, an Irishman, and a Canadian....?”

This is where Boobie Clark played football as a lineman except for one game at Fullback. Paul Brown, coach of the Bengals, saw the film of that game and drafted him in the twelfth round.

“Despite inexperience at the position, he was a breakout star with 988 yards in 254 carries (a 3.9 average) and eight touchdowns and 45 receptions for 347 yards (a 7.7 average). He was named American Football Conference Rookie of the Year in 1973.” Quoting Wiki here. I remember watching him play about 6 seasons for the Bengals and he was AFC rookie of the year. I hope their golf team has many successes.
