Amazon fires back at Seattle's proposed head tax, pauses construction projects

SEATTLE -- Amazon is flexing its muscles making its opposition known to a proposed Seattle tax by bringing a halt to all planning on a massive project scheduled for construction in Downtown Seattle, and may tweak its plans to occupy a new downtown skyscraper.

“I can confirm that pending the outcome of the head tax vote by City Council, Amazon has paused all construction planning on our Block 18 project in downtown Seattle and is evaluating options to sub-lease all space in our recently leased Rainier Square building," says Amazon Vice President Drew Herdener.

The proposed "head tax" would apply only to those companies with $20 million or more annually in taxable gross receipts as measured under the City’s Business and Occupation tax. The city estimates that will be 500 businesses, including Amazon. Those businesses would be charged 26 cents per hour per employee up to $500 maximum per employee per year. Amazon would pay more than $20 million under the proposal, according to the Associated Press.

True, however better now than the last one to turn out the lights.

Old news. Seattle passed the tax, though smaller than proposed. Amazon now moving ahead with construction plans, regardless.

This article is from 2 weeks ago. Whole thing resolved since then.

Tax reduced to $250.00, approved by council, and Amazon has restarted project construction.

Of course I’m very sure that the city pored through the budget and spending data to make sure they eliminated all waste and fraud before they had to resort to levying this new tax, right? That’s how all governments work, yes?

Anyone have a bridge or two to sell me?

Regardless of whether you like Amazon or not, these stupid leftist policies are going to cost the residents of their cities a lot in lost jobs and opportunities. Apple was going to build a billion-dollar facility in some god-forsaken county in Ireland, to the great joy of the local residents who hoped to work there, and a pair of self-proclaimed “environmental preservationists” kept the project in court for so many years that last week Apple just gave up and withdrew its plans. I guess what they want to preserve is rural Ireland’s poverty...

And soon a Big BLUE WAVE that all the rats keep refering to is going to hit Seattle.

Dead beats, free loaders, gang bangers, Criminal Invaders, street hustlers and their associcated crime and filth.

I like it, however this is mean spirited. How can you offer free housing without a Basic Minimum Income? Seeing how they seem to think the Minimum wage should be 15 dollars and hour, 30k a year seems fair.
Come on Seattle get with the times...

What’s happened in the bay area is that tech companies tend to import talent from elsewhere and all local residents get are good property values (if they own) or evicted due to rising rent (if they don’t own). Even though California is posting a net loss of americans they are adding people because tech-oriented migrants are coming in in greater numbers.

all of this has squeezed out the middle class in favor of a global elite and central american underclass.

Today, $275 per head; in a few years, $1000 or $2000.

This is the sort of thing which drives employers like Boeing and Microsoft to spread their operational base. And, Seattle is doing this while Amazon is in the midst of a highly publicized search for a second headquarters location. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Then, written across the enormous page, stopping time, as a last message to the world and to the world's motor which was New York, she saw the lines of a sharp, intransigent handwriting:
