Air Force loses box of grenade rounds in North Dakota. It wants them back.

The U.S. Air Force lost a box of grenade rounds in northwest North Dakota that fell off a Humvee earlier this month, and now is seeking the public’s help in locating the explosives.

A 91st Missile Wing Security Forces team from the Minot Air Force Base lost the ammunition container on May 1 while traveling between missile sites in Mountrail County, according to a news release the Air Force issued late Friday.

The team was traveling on rough gravel roads about four miles west of Parshall when the back hatch of the vehicle opened, and an ammunition container fell out, the Air Force said.

The ammunition is considered safe as long as the container is intact, said Lt. Col. Jamie Humphries, a spokesman for the Minot Air Force Base. However, damage to the container or its contents could lead to an explosion or injury, he said.

If the ammunition is located and is damaged, the area should be evacuated and people should call 911 or the Minot Munitions Reporting Hotline at 701-723-7909.

The missing ammunition is a belt of grenade rounds, contained in a green metal ammo container, that is meant for use with an MK19 machine gun grenade launcher, the Mountrail County Sheriff’s Office said Friday afternoon. The ammunition will not operate in any other launching device.

They wouldn’t need to be so concerned if they had lost the rounds in a tragic boating accident.

I just called the number and said I wanted to order a large sausage and mushroom pizza and a litre sized diet coke.

They told me "15 minutes".

Does that MK19 Machine Gun Grenade Launcher fall into the category of “ASSAULT WEAPON”?

I assume these grenades are shipped unarmed, but arm or “fuse” themselves in flight, after the propellant is ignited?? Does anyone know for sure?

I believe it falls under Destructive Device which is a different license.

After accomplishing a royal screw up in Minot, short of Leavenworth, what garden spot do you get transferred to?

That wouldn’t be thirty mostly olive green 40mm grenades on a chain-link belt, would it?

Yep. Haven’t seen ‘em.

Minot ‘lost’ record of some nukes en route to Louisiana ten years ago. Are these actually messages or something?

The poor bastards are already at Minot. How do you punish them further?

My LANCE missile artillery unit experienced having an M-16A1 fall out of the back of an M-151 Jeep in West Germany in the late 70s. It was found by a local citizen. They called the Polizei who found out what unit had been in the area and arranged to return it. German law requires the payment of a finder's fee to the citizen in such cases. The soldier it was assigned to got an Article 15 non-judicial punishment with loss of money and rank.

The grenade is armed by the force acted upon the grenade when it is fired and by a certain number of rotations of the grenade imparted by the barrel. Even if it’s not armed it can make a 40mm hole in the head if fired.

Always remember fondly that box of incendiary grenades I found in a weapons locker during an inventory.

Weren’t on any list anywhere. SEALs kept their toys in there sometimes.

Thought for a split second about putting them in my car...then imagined the sting operation that probably put them there...and the cameras watching me.

Hey Top, got an extra case of grenades in here...

Had to look it up - 60 rounds per minute, or 40 rounds per minute sustained. I wonder what the average rounds per minute is in an actual fire fight? Hard to imagine having 40 grenades lobbed at you every minute. Oh - and has a range of 1600 yards.

Our Founding Fathers would definitely want the public to have them. I’m sure there are tactics that can be used against them - but it sure makes a 30-round semiauto rifle seem wimpy.
