Amazon cuts Whole Foods prices in new grocery showdown

Amazon and Whole Foods Market are making a surgical strike in the already brutal grocery price war.

On Wednesday, Whole Foods debuted a much-anticipated loyalty program that offers special discounts to Prime customers, including 10 percent off hundreds of sale items and rotating weekly specials such as $10 per pound off wild-caught halibut steaks.

Those perks are available now in Florida and will roll out to all other stores starting this summer. Amazon previously announced free two-hour delivery from Whole Foods stores for members of Prime, its subscription club with fast shipping and video streaming.

The new loyalty strategy will test whether Amazon's $13.7 billion deal for Whole Foods brings much-feared disruption and an intensified price war to the $800 billion U.S. grocery industry dominated by Walmart and Kroger.

Whole Foods, with 463 U.S. stores and roughly 1 percent share of the fragmented U.S. grocery market, has gained momentum since the Amazon merger last summer, Whole Foods co-founder and Chief Executive John Mackey told Reuters.

Even with the price increase of Prime, I'm interested. Especially since I'd sworn off Whole Foods. Their prices are not the only reason I stay away. The clientele at WFs is very off-putting to my delicate sensibilities.

But one comment caught my attention:

Amazon and Whole Foods Market are making a surgical strike in the already brutal grocery price war.

Now, I wonder how that aforementioned Liberal, Elitist-Lite clientele will react to hordes of "regular" people...you know, the Great Unwashed they look down their noses at...coming in to 'their' Organic, gentrified haven.

It might be interesting to observe on occasion.

Would this only apply with online sales or could you use your prime membership at the stores? How would they know you are a prime member?

I notice in my neck of the woods the big competitor to Whole Food is “Fresh Thymes” and they’ve been having some killer sales on seafood. We’ve gotten some jumbo scallops and lobster tails in the last month that cost half what they usually cost on the shelf. I wonder if this is in response?

LOL -what a sale /s - haven’t ever been there but I laugh when I see “Whole Paycheck”. I’m sure it’s too expensive for me.

Wear our ICE jackets and MAGA to clear out the ones you mentioned.

Having a Prime Credit card would be a good start.

That would seem to logically follow. Bezos is a crazy liberal.

Idaho Falls has Natural Grocers. A slimmed down version of Whole Foods, but perfectly suitable for my needs. Staff includes dietary professionals as well as the usual cashiers and stocking staff.

It isn’t cutting prices.

The initial price break on a few items was much fanfare and little sizzle as well.

IF you buy into Prime and IF you are in Florida...

A few days ago I checked out the prices at Whole Foods, still way too high. Trader Joe’s always has better prices.

Letting my Alexa subsidized Prime subscription lapse. Not sure when because Amazon keeps extending it when they miss on the free shipping. Never shopped for groceries at either Amazon.com or Whole Foods. Have stopped shopping the warehouses too. Local grocers are very competitive and have better quality meets and produce.

Why not a prime membership card or your number like at Sam’s club.

I have a Trader Joe’s & Whole Foods right down the street....I use Traders every time. Better prices & better products. Only went into Whole Foods once. The prices were wack.

I prefer Trader Joe’s and then Sprouts, which to me is like an affordable Whole Foods.

For regular items I love the new Sams Scan and Go app - payment without standing in the checkout line makes it easy to go to Sams at any time.

WTF is truffle oil? (or do we really want to know?)

imagine I’ve lived my entire life without any Truffle Oil!
I feel SO very, very “Victimized” by this terrible, inhumane deprivation!

“How would they know you are a prime member?”

Mark of the Beast barcodes tattooed on foreheads? Chip implants?

Or maybe you could swipe your card or type your phone number into the keypad, like other supermarkets...

I like Sprout’s. I only get selected items there; usually fruits and vegetables on weekly sales.

DID get a package of their chicken wings (pre-cooked). Poured some additional wing sauce on it. Good snack.

Burp
