Contrary to what has been said in the pro-government media in Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğans three-day official visit to Britain this week has turned out to be counterproductive, London-based journalist Firdevs Robison said on her website.
She said that apart from supportive lead articles in the conservative Times and the Daily Telegraph newspapers, British Prime Minister Theresa May and her government were intensely criticised for inviting Erdoğan in the run-up to Turkish presidential and parliamentary on June 24.
Human rights and press freedom organisations meanwhile urged May to publicly call for the release of more than 100 journalists jailed in Turkey and protests took place throughout Erdoğans visit.
The protests in London made it clear that President Erdoğan cannot simply carry on with business as usual and expect there to be no public pressure when he travels to democratic countries, Rebecca Vincent, UK Bureau Director for Reporters Without Borders told Robinson.
Vincent said that, although rights organisations were happy that May had talked about the need for Turkey to uphold democratic values and human rights during her joint press conference with Erdoğan on Tuesday, she had not specifically asked for the release of the journalists and had let Erdoğan label those journalists as terrorists.

That which has been seen, cannot be unseen.
There’s only around 500,000 Turks in the UK....of which more than half are Cypriot-Turks. I’m not sure that many of them got all hyped up.
You could write his name backwards and who would notice?
Nagodre Piyyat Pecer
Is there a political reason for that?
For instance, were Greek Cypriots unwelcome in Britain?
Just a few days ago Erdogan called for a massive anti-Israel response by all Muslims because of the Jerusalem issue.
How can any Western leader sit down in the same room with this man?

I don't have the answer. This will not be ignored forever.
If you go prior to the 9-year period of ‘crisis’ in Cyprus (late 50s to mid-60s) and the 1974 Turk invasion, a great deal of Brit influence existed on the isle. After the crisis period and invasion, some of the isle folks split off into Greece and the UK. My understanding (only told by Greeks) is that the Cypriot Turks weren’t exactly pleased with the operation of the north of the Isle and the Turkish government.
Some journalists suggest that half the population in the north are first generation Turks....brought into Cyprus by Turkey. I don’t know if that is really true, or any data exists to prove that point.
I suspect the UN had something to do with many of those Cypriot Turks emigrating to the U.K. I recall seeing local government websites in the U.K. a decade or more ago, with FAQ entries to the effect of “Why can’t these “asylum seekers” return home now?” The answer given was always some UN Agreement citation, chapter and verse.
Not really following this but can I assume this Muslim POS got a warmer welcome than Trump would ever get in the UK?
He was received by the Queen of England. I wished I could have been a fly on the wall at that one.
He met with Theresa May, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. They had a photo op. She and Erdogan the Islamist are both phony. All smiles and handshakes.
The reality is, the visit to the EU will not change anything in Turkey.
Question is, will the EU continue to sell weapons to Turkey.
We will see Turkey implode. Unfortunately they may do more damage to the region before that happens.
What a world we live in. I wonder if US membership in NATO makes sense anymore.
I believe that President Trump has openly questioned that.
The other members of NATO need the US much more than the US needs NATO.
