Bob Corker: Let’s Face It, No One Cares About Fiscal Responsibility
Hotair ^ | 05/18/2018 | Allahpundit

Posted on 05/18/2018 1:25:24 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

There are truths, and there are truth bombs. Occasionally, though, there are truth nukes.

Someone asks Corker about fiscal responsibility. He answers, “Yeah, I’m just over it. Nobody cares. The President isn’t going to deal with it, he made it clear in the campaign.” @WRCB

— Michelle Heron (@MichelleWRCB) May 18, 2018

Somewhere Paul Ryan is sitting alone amid the rubble of entitlement reform, all alone and sobbing like Burgess Meredith at the end of that “Twilight Zone” episode.

In isolation, that tweet makes it sound like Corker is blaming Trump. Not really. Watch the clip below and you’ll find him candid about the fact that voters aren’t interested in fiscal responsibility either, which of course is true. Or revisit this post from March, when the GOP was busy moving its grotesque omnibus spending bill through Congress. Corker dropped another truth nuke on the occasion: If Hillary Clinton were president, he observed, congressional Republicans would at least pretend to care about cutting spending. With no Democrat in the White House to posture over, though, all pretense of concern fades. He wasn’t indicting Trump so much as his own colleagues. The party’s pitiful failure to shrink government is much more their fault than his, predating POTUS’s political career by literally decades. The next time someone tells you that Trump killed conservatism, you remind ’em: That which is already dead cannot die.

By the way, Corker ended up voting for that garbage omnibus bill. And he did it after voting for tax cuts last year and then complaining that deficits are poison for the country long-term. When he says he’s “over it” in terms of caring about fiscal responsibility, he’s not exaggerating for rhetorical effect. He really is! He’s got less than a year left in politics. He’s not fighting the tide anymore. If you want to throw some more gas on the fiscal fire, he’ll hand you the can. Exit question via Jay Cost: If he doesn’t care anymore, why not resign now and let the governor appoint someone who does?

Deficits don’t matter, until they do—in the form of massive inflation combined with equally massive interest rates.

Still hoping they can get that final amnesty to complete the Bush Plan for North Mexico (aka USA).

Trump cares, and his tax cuts have actually increased federal tax receipts already. Those may not sustain, but in time the receipts will definitely increase.

As they increase, the deficit spending lowers.

Part of Trump’s efforts to build a wall is based on the premise taxpayers are paying for illegal alien related services.

Trump has lowered unemployment. He is getting people up off their posteriors and working, meaning the government is supporting few people.

He does care.

Corker and others who pop off like this, are doing nothing but pumping up the Leftist’s claim that Republicans don’t care about deficits. They do. Further, they are the ones who have come up with sane ways to reduce them.

Corker is a lame ass idiot, useful tool.

They WILL all care about the debt when interest rates rise significantly and the interest on the debt consumes the budget and crowds out their pet spending. Only then will they start to understand. Even then I doubt they do much except whine and raise taxes.

Well that's not true. They care very greatly about not having any of it.

I’m coming to the conclusion that they are going to get away with print-and-spend, probably for the rest of my natural lifetime.

Who is going to call them on it? The effects of our sudden collapse on the rest of the world are too horrible for them to contemplate. Money is no longer backed by gold, silver or anything tangible, so as long as they can induce mass psychosis in the world population this game of Three Card Monte will go on.

If the wheels aren’t coming off at $21 trillion, will they ever? We may truly be Too Big to Fail.

Not So Radical Republicans, Reason magazine, 1998

Late last year at a budget strategy session in his office on Capitol Hill, House Budget Committee Chairman John Kasich (R-Ohio) held a briefing for a handful of small-government types on the year's upcoming budget fight. I asked Kasich why Republicans had abandoned their agenda of terminating hundreds of useless federal programs. He cupped his hands behind his head, kicked his feet up on his desk, and declared: "You just don't get it. The jig is up around here when it comes to cutting the budget."

Every jaw in the room visibly dropped. We were stunned by this devastatingly frank declaration of surrender--especially coming from Kasich, the GOP's eternal optimist and the one man on Capitol Hill during the last three years most single-mindedly dedicated to downsizing our $1.75 trillion federal enterprise. That this budget hawk had so clearly lost faith that his Republican brethren would actually cut spending was a depressing and dramatic sign that the GOP's budget revolution was over.

We shouldn't have been so shocked. Kasich had merely jolted us with the obvious truth. As the 105th Congress winds down, the budget is bulkier than ever before. This spring, the Senate Republicans approved a budget that calls for spending and tax cuts that are, in the words of a disgusted Rep. David McIntosh of Indiana, "anemic and an embarrassment." If approved, the federal budget will be some $300 billion higher than when the GOP took over the reins of Congress in January 1995. Adjusted for inflation, the four-year spending total of $7.5 trillion for 1998-2002 is more money than America spent to fight both World Wars, the Civil War, and the Revolutionary War. In fact, in today's dollars, it is more money than the U.S. government spent on everything from 1800 to 1960.

I think this is a very insightful post. If the rest of the world is going to honor our currency at face value we are going to keep printing it. I wonder if this what some insiders figured out long ago

US Voters have prove this to be true. The MINUTE you suggest slowing down the rate of growth in spending, much less cuts, they all rush out and vote for Dems.

The problem Conservatives always make the mistake of wanting to protect their spending and cut the spending they don’t like.. Voters all have something they want money spent on. They find with the notion of “cutting spending” as long as it is someone else’s spending that is going to be cut.

The result is nothing gets done

The only way to ever cut the Fed spending habit is to set across the board spending cuts. That voter might support

Many states have execrable Communists. Lil Boob has been a buffoon. Wealthy leftists can just write a check to buy a Senate seat. It doesn’t help having open primaries where the biggest RINO wins and no runoffs. Things will be different this year, though. But we still need to close those damn primaries.

True, but that $1.3 trillion omnibus bill a month or so ago kind of negates all that.

We borrowed around $448 billion in Q1, on track to borrow some $2 trillion this year.

And borrowing costs are not going down anytime soon either.
