Irish Times exit poll projects Ireland has voted by landslide to repeal Eighth Amendment

Exit poll result suggests huge majority of younger people voted Yes

Ireland has voted by a landslide margin to change the constitution so that abortion can be legalised, according to an exit poll conducted for The Irish Times by Ipsos/MRBI.

The poll suggests that the margin of victory for the Yes side in the referendum will be 68 per cent to 32 per cent – a stunning victory for the Yes side after a long and often divisive campaign. See here for liveblog coverage of events across Friday in the referendum vote.

More than 4,500 voters were interviewed by Ipsos/MRBI as they left polling stations on Friday. Sampling began at 7am and was conducted at 160 locations across every constituency throughout the day. The margin of error is estimated at +/- 1.5 per cent.

Counting of votes begins on Saturday morning at 9am with an official result expected to be declared in the afternoon.

However, the size of the victory predicted by the exit poll leaves little doubt that, whatever the final count figures, the constitutional ban on abortion, inserted in a referendum in 1983, is set to be repealed.

Wave of support

Although polls had predicted victory for the Yes side, few anticipated the great wave of support for repeal of Eighth Amendment that swept the country. The highest Yes vote was in Dublin, where 77 per cent of voters backed the proposals, the poll predicts.

However, the expectation amongst No campaigners that rural Ireland would vote against changing the constitution was wide of the mark.

While the majority in favour of repeal in rural Ireland at 60 per cent was smaller than in urban Ireland, it was still a thumping majority in favour of change.

They are too dim-witted to understand that they are voting for self-inflicted genocide.

I guess Ireland is another country that will be extinct in 100 years.

St. Patrick drove out real snakes to be replaced by human snakes. Just bring back pagan Celtic worship and be done with it.

This is heart-breaking.

For many decades, Ireland was among the countries with the very lowest maternal mortality rates on earth. Watch mothers' health and well-being deteriorate while the babies' death rate soars.

Even the Western Counties voted for the Culture of Death. What truly horrifying news.

I don't get what ideas you can advance that make the notion of murdering children attractive. It would seem to me that everything in human nature would rebel at the concept and the hard sell would be for the abortion lobby. Instead, it seems like it's the other way around.

I knew Satan was powerful but he really brought his A game on this issue.

I always marvel at those who celebrate the “right” to kill their unborn children. May God have mercy on the innocent.

I'm very, very proud of my ancestors that left Ireland in the mid-late 1800s but to me the Ireland of today is nothing but another filthy, depraved European cesspool.

This is heartbreaking. I prayed maybe all the polls were wrong and when people were in the privacy of a voting booth they would vote for life. Sad beyond words for what has happened to Ireland.
