SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his commitment to “complete” denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and to a planned meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said on Sunday.

In Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump signaled that preparations for a June 12 summit with Kim were going ahead, despite having called off the meeting last week.

Moon and Kim agreed at a surprise meeting on Saturday that the possible North Korea-U.S. summit must be held, Moon told a news conference in Seoul.

“Chairman Kim and I have agreed that the June 12 summit should be held successfully, and that our quest for the Korean peninsula’s denuclearisation and a perpetual peace regime should not be halted,” Moon said.

The meeting was the latest dramatic turn in a week of diplomatic ups and downs surrounding the prospects for an unprecedented summit between the United States and North Korea, and the strongest sign yet that the two Korean leaders are trying to keep the on-again off-again meeting on track....

It all looks very hopeful, but as Ronald Reagan said; “Trust, but verify!”

I’m surprised the South isn’t asking to become part of the nuclear club in exchange for access to the North’s markets.

“and a perpetual peace regime should not be halted,” Moon said.“

Peace is that brief shining moment in history when everyone is busy reloading.

The South and Japan could both go nuclear in six months any time they wanted to. They are two of the most advanced countries on Earth and we’re talking 1940’s technology here.

“denuclearisation “ is nothing. It’s a throwaway bargaining chip. There’s much more in play.

Anyone happy with a return to the staus quo before NK had nukes is an obvious fool.
Trump is no fool.

Wow, some people keep moving those goal posts. It's like they have legs of their own.

China and NK would love that, and so would our media. But there's so much more going on.

I thought it was about the nukes, you know, that threatened Japan, the U.S. and the world. What are you talking about?

2 years ago those nukes (which NK would be instantly obliterated for using) didn’t ‘threaten’ anyone.
I hope you’re clear that returning to the NK of 2 years ago would be no accomplishment.

I’d say the two biggest aims are limiting it’s military and opening NK up to SH, Chin and the West.
China also wants NK opened up. They planned to get that by just ending the nukes, but Trump will get real change.

A ‘throwaway’ is something worthless a negotiator creates to get a concession. I’m sure the tactic is mentioned in “The Art of The Deal”.

Top priority is the nukes...Everything else follows.

Here’s what I’m getting at: for ending the nukes NK/China gets nothing. No deal. Nothing.
So for a deal there has to be more. We give, they give.
But we give nothing for the nukes.

Trump said NK MUST commit to denuclearization before any sit down occurs and the above statement does not say that.

Scott Adams of Dilbert fame analyzed the actual statements and you would really have to want to believe the North wants to denuclearize to get that from them. What Kim said was along the lines of “if everybody else does it, we will do it too.” But as one article posited, if Kim seriously tries to give up his one ace in the hole card, he will be assassinated. Kim can’t give up the nukes because they are the only reason he can blackmail other governments into making concessions. They are the only reason North Korea doesn’t suffer reprisals when they do things like sinking the Chonan.

It's not "moving the goal posts", it's called historical reality. North Korea presently has over 200,000 missile's and artillery pieces aimed at Seoul alone. And a massive standing brain washed military bent on killing Americans, South Koreans and the Japanese.

Little rocket boy doesn't need nukes to continue to present "a clear and present danger" to his neighbors.

We're not "moving the goal posts"; we are citing the fact that we are dealing with a murderous, deranged, maniacal, Stalinist dictator who maintains power and runs his entire country based upon ceaseless terror at the point of a gun and a massive, brutal, Stalinist gulag system that presently holds several million of his own poor people.
