Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens resigns, ending political career once aimed at presidency
KC Star ^ | 5/29/18 | Jason Hancock

Eric Greitens stormed into the governor’s office in January 2017 vowing to clean up a state government he said was corrupt.

He resigned Tuesday just as abruptly as he had arrived on Missouri's political scene, his career buried under an avalanche of scandal and felony charges.

Mike Parson, 63, a fellow Republican and former sheriff who served 11 years in the General Assembly before being elected as lieutenant governor in 2016, will take over as Missouri’s 57th governor. He’ll finish Greitens’ term, which runs until January 2021.

A Rhodes scholar and former Navy SEAL, Greitens was once considered one of the brightest stars in the Republican Party — a rock star who traveled the country campaigning for his fellow GOP governors, all while building his national profile and donor base for an almost inevitable run at the White House.

It's over. Hopefully the fallout won't hit Hawley.

I think Hawley has positioned himself well on this.

He has done a good job of distancing himself from the growing scandals.

You can bet that in the Senate race, Hawley will be sure to remind voters that Greitens was only a Republican for two years. The rest of his life, he has been a Democrat, and with any luck, they can have him back.

Sarah Steelman or Sam Graves should run for MO governor in 2020. Gov. Parson is too bland. I know MO. I have family in Missouri, one of best states in America.

Now that she’s blown the whistle, he should go ahead and release the photo.

Hawley came out against Greitens weeks ago. I thought it was pretty feckless of him, but the resignation solves the whole thing.

Greitens is a phony and a life-long democrat that fooled primary voters.

Tried to, with really bad timing. But I’m kinda thankful Eric has ended this, all of the corrupt charges from the St. Louis sewer having been dropped.

Greitens supports blame Hawley for a lot of the problems Greitens has faced. Some will blame him for the resignation. It's going to cause a split in the party; how serious remains to be seen. Personally I don't think it's fatal to Hawley's campaign but it doesn't help either.

Hawley is a preppy Ivy League baby-face, but we need McCaskill out -— bad.

Just hope Hawley isn’t as bad as a senator he reminds me of (Sasse).

Never fails. I’m always correct on this.....

Republicans resign in disgrace when scandals catch up with them.

Democrats? The use them as resume enhancers. They are not deterred on little bit.
