If the cancellation wasn't to be now, then it would have been the next week or the week after. The success of an independent voice which was not hostile toward the President was a situation that would not be allowed to stand. This had very little to do with the joke, and everything to do with the untenable situation ABC found itself in.

I think rosanne was trying to make a point about Hollywood intolerance of conservatives. ABC was willing to sacrifice hundreds of liberal jobs to punish one conservative. That is how effed up Hollywood is now and rosanne proved it to the world. All of Hollywood has to reckon with it now because Hollywood is a relatively small community. This brings the hypocrisy home.
Also she might be trying to help her crew by labeling them liberals so they can get rehired. It is somewhat interesting that she left out the actors— maybe some of them were already out of the closet and an attempt to label them would have been too obvious of a ploy...
